Hockey is one of the most challenging sports to play. Not only is it physically demanding, but there is also an extremely difficult balance aspect involved. Yet Youth Hockey programs continue to grow with more skilled players.

The game has seen its fair share of tragedies over the past few years, and of course, since it is played on ice with two blades on your feet, there are bound to be some injuries, which is why neck guards are now mandatory for Canadian Hockey League players.

Recently, a tragedy unfolded after a 17-year-old youth hockey lost consciousness on the ice during a game. Sharks Elite Youth Hockey Program player Connor Kasin passed away on Sunday after being given CPR.

On Saturday, Kasin played charity hockey at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, New York. According to the Nassau County Police Department, he lost consciousness during the intermission while skating on the ice.

“Civilians at scene began CPR which was continued upon ambulance and police arrival,” said the NCPD, adding, “The male was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. There is no criminality suspected. The investigation is ongoing.”

Kasin’s passing was confirmed on Sunday after the Sharks posted to Facebook, saying, “It is with a heavy heart the Sharks share the sudden passing of 18U defenseman, Connor Kasin. Please keep the Kasin family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The hockey game was an event to support the family of Sabrina Naravetta, who tragically passed in a car accident last year. The family also posted a statement on the horrific passing, “There are no words to convey our heartbreak that we feel as last night was supposed to be a fun night.”
