Geno Auriemma was as keen as anyone to ensure he didn’t miss any of JuJu Watkins’ latest March Madness outing as USC took on Mississippi State after UConn’s win over South Dakota State
Geno Auriemma threatened to halt his ESPN interview to ensure nobody missed watching JuJu Watkins after UConn’s March Madness win over South Dakota State.
Auriemma saw Paige Bueckers score a career-high 34 points in her last-ever home game to inspire the Huskies to a 91-57 win to march on to the Sweet 16. The game was shown live on ESPN and Auriemma was interviewed after the game – but given the news he was in a tight window before USC’s game against Mississippi State on the channel.

And Auriemma was as excited as anyone to watch superstar JuJu Watkins – moments before she suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury in a heartbreaking scene in the first quarter. Just prior to tip-off, Auriemma was asked: “You told us this morning that the painter was the only one that sees the blemishes in their artwork.
“What do you like about the painting of this team right now most as you go forward? In one minute, we’ve gotta get to JuJu!”
Auriemma joked he wouldn’t answer the question as he instantly replied: “Oh man. Get off me right now. I want to watch her play!”
He then added his serious thoughts: “I think the way we’re connected a little bit. The way we seem to cover for each other, way better than we did before. And whenever we need something, somebody steps up and does it, and that you don’t know until later in the season.
“We’re not just a Paige Bueckers show, even though tonight it was. I think we have a lot of pieces that can win it.”
With plenty of time left in the allotted minute, he then started counting down as he said: “15, 14…JuJu, we want JuJu! Give me some JuJu!”.

Unfortunately for Auriemma and college basketball fans, there was only a small dose of Watkins as she was carried from the court and straight to the locker room in agony in the opening moments.
After scoring three points and registering two assists early on, she went down clutching her right knee after twisting awkwardly as she drove for the basket with USC leading 13-2 with 4:43 left in the first quarter.
She was unable to put any weight on her knee as she headed straight to the locker room with instant fears her NCAA Tournament could be over.
