Dawn Staley Sums Up South Carolina’s Blowout NCAA Tournament Win With 6 Words

In a press conference after the South Carolina Gamecocks’ big win against Tennessee Tech, head coach Dawn Staley only needed six words to sum up the game.

“We shot the ball pretty good,” Staley said during the postgame press conference after their first NCAA Tournament game.

The words were a bit of an understatement after South Carolina’s massive March Madness win. The team walked away beating Tennessee 108 to 48 and breaking personal records. After the first half, an ESPN reporter noted that their 64 bench points were the most bench points made in the first half ever in an NCAA Tournament game.

During the postgame press conference, Staley was asked what they can bring forward after this game to help Sunday’s against Indiana. Here’s her full quote, around five minutes into the press conference.

“It’s just being disciplined to playing good basketball,” she said. “Because I’ve always said good basketball is contagious basketball… And I hope we bring our ability to shoot the ball as well as we shot the ball. We shot the ball pretty good and hopefully we can take that into the next game.”

She also admitted some weak points during the game, noting that the third quarter didn’t start off so well.

“I thought our starters … didn’t get off to a great start…in the third quarter,” she said. “Just wasn’t able to manufacture enough points. I just wanted to see if our second unit could just jumpstart our offense… We inserted them in the game and they made it happen.”

And she had high praise for Joyce Edwards and MyLaysia Fulwiley.

“We’ve watched them since they were in the sixth grade,” Staley said. “We’ve watched them … come to camp and win all the words… It’s cool to see that process get to a point where they trust us enough to want to come here and spend their … college years here getting ready for that next step in life.”
