THE THING BEHIND THE CEMETERY WASN’T ALONE — THE NIGHT I DISCOVERED WHAT THE DOGMAN WAS REALLY PROTECTING | PART 3
THE THING BEHIND THE CEMETERY WASN’T ALONE — THE NIGHT I DISCOVERED WHAT THE DOGMAN WAS REALLY PROTECTING | PART 3
For months after I left the cemetery, I tried to convince myself that my life had returned to normal.
I moved to a small house two towns away.
No woods behind the property.
No old fence.
No endless fields of graves outside my window.
Just a quiet neighborhood with streetlights, neighbors, and ordinary problems.
A leaking faucet.
A broken fence.
A noisy dog next door.
Normal things.
Things that belonged in the real world.
But every night, around 2 or 3 in the morning…
I still woke up.
And every time I woke up, I looked toward the window.
I don’t know why.
Maybe because some part of me expected to see two pale eyes staring back.
The strangest part was that I never saw the Dogman again.
Not with my own eyes.
Not on camera.
Not anywhere.
But I started noticing something.
Animals reacted differently around me.
Dogs that used to bark at everyone would suddenly become silent when I walked past.
Birds would stop singing whenever I entered wooded areas.
Even deer…
Deer would stand completely still and stare toward the trees.
Like they were listening to something I couldn’t hear.
At first, I thought I was imagining it.
After everything I had experienced, I knew my mind was capable of creating fear where there was nothing.
But then I received another call.
It was from the new groundskeeper.
His name was Daniel.
He had only worked at the cemetery for eight months.
When he called me, I almost didn’t answer.
Part of me knew I should ignore it.
Part of me knew that whatever happened next…
I was already connected to that place.
I picked up.
“Mark…”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“What happened?”
There was a long silence.
Then he said:
“I found your coffee can.”
My heart stopped.
“What coffee can?”
“The one you left in the house.”
I immediately knew what he meant.
Years earlier, I had kept everything inside an old metal coffee can.
The memory cards.
The pieces of hair from the fence.
Notes about the dates and times.
Everything I had collected.
I had hidden it behind a loose board in the old house.
I thought nobody would ever find it.
“Daniel,” I said.
“Where did you find it?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“Mark… why didn’t you tell me there were more videos?”
My hands went cold.
“More videos?”
“Yes.”
He sent me a picture.
It was the old coffee can sitting on the kitchen table.
But beside it…
Were several memory cards.
Cards I had never seen before.
I drove back to the cemetery the next morning.
I know what you’re thinking.
After everything that happened…
Why would I go back?
I asked myself the same question.
But there was something worse than fear.
Not knowing.
For years, I had lived with questions.
Why did it choose that cemetery?
Why did it watch the cameras?
Why did it know my name?
And why…
Why did it never attack me?
Daniel was waiting outside the old house.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept in days.
“You watched them?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Some of them.”
“How many?”
He looked toward the woods.
“All of them.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“How many cameras did you install?”
He swallowed.
“Four.”
“How many videos?”
He looked at me.
“Over three hundred.”
We went inside the house.
The same kitchen.
The same window.
The same place where I had watched that cemetery for eleven years.
Daniel opened his laptop.
The first video started.
It was from two months after I left.
The cemetery was empty.
Nothing moved.
Then…
The Dogman appeared.
But this time, it wasn’t digging.
It was standing beside the back fence.
Looking into the woods.
Waiting.
For nearly twenty minutes…
It didn’t move.
Then something happened.
The trees moved.
Not from wind.
Something was walking between them.
The Dogman lowered its body.
Its ears pointed forward.
Its entire posture changed.
It looked alert.
Almost afraid.
Something was out there.
Something that scared the thing I thought was the monster.
I leaned closer to the screen.
The camera quality was poor.
But I could see movement.
A shadow.
A shape.
Then another.
The Dogman stepped backward.
Slowly.
Like it was giving something else space.
Daniel paused the video.
“Watch the next one.”
The next clip was recorded three nights later.
The camera was facing the empty grass behind the cemetery.
At 3:12 AM…
A figure entered the frame.
But it wasn’t walking.
It was crawling.
Slowly.
Almost silently.
It moved on four limbs.
But its body was wrong.
Too long.
Too thin.
Its legs bent strangely.
The creature stopped near the fence.
Then it lifted its head.
And looked directly at the camera.
I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.
That same cold feeling.
The feeling of being watched.
But this wasn’t the Dogman.
This was something different.
Something worse.
“How many are there?” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then he opened another file.
And another.
And another.
Every video showed the same pattern.
The Dogman appeared.
Then another creature appeared.
And every time…
The Dogman moved between the cemetery and the forest.
Like a guard.
That was when I realized something terrifying.
Maybe the Dogman wasn’t the predator.
Maybe it was the reason nothing else came closer.
I remembered something the old groundskeeper, Harold, told me.
Something I had forgotten.
On my first day, when he showed me the back fence, he stopped there for a moment.
He stared into the woods.
Then he said:
“Some places have rules for a reason.”
At the time, I thought he meant trespassers.
Animals.
Children.
But now…
I understood.
He wasn’t protecting the cemetery from people.
He was protecting people from what lived beyond it.
That evening, Daniel showed me the final video.
The one he almost didn’t watch.
The date was from three weeks earlier.
The night before he called me.
The camera was positioned near the old fence.
The Dogman entered first.
It looked exhausted.
Injured.
Its fur was covered in mud.
Then something moved behind it.
A second creature.
Larger.
Much larger.
The Dogman turned around.
For several seconds, the two creatures stood facing each other.
I expected a fight.
I expected violence.
But that didn’t happen.
Instead…
The Dogman stepped aside.
And lowered its head.
Like it was showing respect.
Or fear.
The larger creature walked past.
Toward the cemetery.
Toward the graves.
Toward the house.
Toward the place where I used to sleep.
Then the video ended.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“Mark…”
“What?”
“Why did it come to your house?”
I looked at the screen.
At the empty frame where the creature disappeared.
And for the first time…
I wondered if I had misunderstood everything.
Maybe the Dogman wasn’t watching me because it wanted to hurt me.
Maybe it was watching me because it knew something was coming.
Something that had been there long before me.
That night, I stayed at a motel.
I didn’t want to sleep in the old house.
I didn’t want to be anywhere near that cemetery.
At 3:17 in the morning…
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
I didn’t hear a person.
Only breathing.
Slow.
Heavy.
Then…
A sound.
A low growl.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Almost like a warning.
Then came three knocks.
I looked toward the motel window.
My room was on the second floor.
Nobody could be standing outside.
Nobody.
The phone suddenly disconnected.
A second later…
A message appeared.
No number.
No name.
Just three words:
“DON’T GO BACK.”
I stared at the screen.
Because deep down…
I knew who sent it.
The question was…
Was it the Dogman?
Or was it the thing the Dogman was afraid of?
The next morning, Daniel called again.
His voice was shaking.
“Mark…”
“What happened?”
He was silent.
Then he said:
“The cemetery isn’t the same anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“I checked the old graves.”
“And?”
“There are new holes.”
I closed my eyes.
“Where?”
His answer made my blood run cold.
“Not the back section.”
“Not the new graves.”
“The old section.”
“The graves from the 1800s.”
For eleven years…
The Dogman had never entered that area.
Never once.
Because the ground was too hard.
Because the roots were too thick.
Because there was nothing worth digging for.
But now…
Something had changed.
Something had entered the one place it always avoided.
Daniel sent me one final picture.
A hole beside one of the oldest graves.
The dirt was scattered around it.
And inside the hole…
Was something buried.
Not an animal.
Not food.
Something else.
Something wrapped in old fabric.
Something that looked like it had been hidden there for a very long time.
And then I noticed the detail that made me drop my phone.
Carved into the stone beside the grave…
Were four words.
Words that had been hidden beneath years of moss.
Words that nobody had seen for decades.
“IT IS STILL HERE.”
I don’t know what was buried in that grave.
I don’t know why the Dogman avoided that section for so long.
And I don’t know what finally made it return.
But one thing I know now…
The creature I feared for all those years…
May have never been the monster.
It may have been the only thing standing between us…
And something much older hiding in those woods.
