“I’m just trying to sing along with the music like normally do. Just trying to stay in the moment”. It was all happy songs for Damion Lee who made his much-anticipated return to the court after almost a year absent. And Stephen Curry couldn’t be happier to see his former Warriors teammate back. Why wouldn’t he be? After all, that’s his family right there, his sister Sydel Curry’s husband.

During the Lakers vs Suns preseason game, Damion Lee made his return to the court. Apart from scoring 10 points in 10 minutes, the game had it’s own significance for Lee and his loved ones. Stephen Curry, fresh off of a preseason win against the Clippers joined in to congratulate his brother-in-law. Taking to IG, Curry shared a post on his story and captioned it, “Welcome Back”.

Just like his brother, Sydel also posted a post on her story that was shared by the WNBA star, Cameron Brink’s mother who left multiple crying emojis seeing the comeback. The two families share a close bond for years as Brink and Currys grew up together. Sydel later posted another picture of her husband in action on the court.

Crediting God for the miraculous comeback, Sydel penned a touching message. “Getting through these past 17 months has been a battle but the confidence he has in himself is truly amazing and that’s the reason why he is who he is… Our kids have an amazing role model and we can’t wait to continue cheering on dada for the rest of our lives! So proud of you honey! We only keep going from here and we always stay ready!” Damion too shared the story of a constant battle against the setback and how he finally reached his goal with faith, during the post-game interview.

Damion Lee opens up about his injury, therapy and comeback

A dastardly practice session and it looked like that was it for Damion Lee’s basketball career. Lee underwent a double posterior root repair of his meniscus, putting him out of commission for 17 long months. For outsiders, it was a severe injury, but for Lee it was a journey.

“It’s been a journey. It was a uphill battle for a while. Fighting depression. Going to see a therapist. Just didn’t know if I was going to be the same person again, let alone the same player,” Damion Lee said during the Suns media day. After the triumphant return against the Lakers, he echoed those same words. “It’s been a journey…I’m not gonna cry yet,” Lee responded when asked about his return after the game. “I mean, just having the support of my family, my friends throughout this whole process, the support of my teammates.”

Not only him, even Lee’s teammates were hyped for his return. “They joke with me as soon as I came in, caught the ball the first time and shot it. They were like, yeah. That’s the D Lee that we know. So it was just great to be out there to get some NBA action,” Damion said in an on-court interview following the game. Lee’s return isn’t only a numerical boost for the Suns, but it is also a morale boost for the roster, who will be looking to go into the new season with a clear mindset, a mindset of winning.
