Royal expert, Rebecca English, recently shared that she was with Prince William when Kate Middleton’s topless photos were leaked.

Back in 2012, nude photos of Kate Middleton were leaked in a French publication. Now, royal expert, Rebecca English, is reflecting on Prince William’s reaction at the time in an op-ed for The Daily Mail, in which she describes what she saw on the day topless photos of Kate Middleton were published. She wrote that she was with Prince William on a tour in Malaysia when the pictures were shared.

The expert wrote that she had never seen the Prince of Wales “so angry.” His “jaw clenched, he could barely contain his fury,” English writes. “His anger was completely understandable: the instinctive reaction of a man whose wife was violated by the paparazzi, a hurtful re-imagining of the harassment he believes his late mother endlessly endured.”
She said that Middleton’s reaction was more measured as she continued to undertake a day of royal duties. The Princess of Wales, whose privacy had just violated by paparazzi, was “the picture of cool, calm, and utterly unruffled elegance” and English wrote that she was “marveling how she was able to smile, shake hands and make small talk, without the slightest quiver or indication that anything was amiss.”

Prince William sued Closer, the magazine that published the photos, for invasion of privacy. The publication was ordered to pay Middleton $120,000 in damages, and the editor and publisher were each fined 45,000 euros, according to The Cut.

The couple’s attorney, Jean Weil, read a statement for the couple during the trial. “My wife and I thought that we could go to France for a few days in a secluded villa owned by a member of my family, and thus enjoy our privacy.”
The statement continues, “We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests. The clandestine way in which these photographs were taken was particularly shocking to us as it breached our privacy.”
English wrote in her story that William felt that he had “failed” to protect his wife. “He had promised her parents when he asked for their daughter’s hand in marriage two years earlier that he would always do his best to protect her—and felt (wrongly, in my opinion) that he had failed,” she wrote on the eve of their 14th anniversary, which they will be spending in Scotland. “And it shows how far they have come together since those testing times in Malaysia and their continued strength as a family unit.”
