Spurs star Victor Wembanyama shares honest take on Shaquille O’Neal’s criticism of today’s NBA
Shaquille O’Neal has always been a vocal critic of the modern NBA game. Recently, he shared his thoughts on current play. In response, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama quickly added his perspective on the matter.

The NBA has undergone a significant transformation over the years, evolving into a more physically demanding sport while simultaneously reducing rough play. Stricter defensive rules now add complexity to defensive strategies, sparking debate among former players like Shaquille O’Neal. The legendary center recently described the current era as decidedly “soft,” provoking a swift response from San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.
Victor Wembanyama appeared on Cold As Balls, where Kevin Hart brought up recent comments made by Shaquille O’Neal. The young Spurs star listened carefully, then offered a direct response: “Shaq has always been one of my favorite players, but one of my least favorite journalists.”
The ongoing criticism from former NBA players has not sat well with the league’s current stars. Even LeBron James broke his silence on the matter during an interview with Pat McAfee in April 2025. “A lot of those guys that played the game, they played the game while they were talented. I don’t think they thought the game or were ever smart. They were just bigger, stronger, and maybe faster, and they dominated, and when it was over, it was over,” he said.
Building on that, LeBron James suggested that the NBA’s shift in physical standards now places greater value on basketball IQ over brute strength. That perspective aligns with Victor Wembanyama’s recent remarks, and many fans have echoed their concerns, arguing that the constant criticism around this topic fuels a toxic narrative within the league.

Moreover, this evolution in how the game is played has allowed unconventional stars like Wembanyama to flourish. He does not resemble the dominant big men of the past—like Shaquille O’Neal, who built his legacy on sheer power and toughness. Yet, Wembanyama continues to impress with his skill and feel for the game, proving that prioritizing talent and intelligence can define success in today’s era.
LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama are not trying to discredit Shaquille O’Neal or the legends of previous eras. In fact, the Spurs’ rising star included Shaq in his all-time starting lineup, showcasing the admiration he holds for the NBA legend.
Despite the latter, both LeBron and Victor are calling for some respect from former players. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, James expressed his belief that they have spoken out comfortably, assuming current players will not respond due to potential repercussions.
