PART 4: Kind CEO Gave Poor Begger His $1M Card… What She Did Next Was More Shocking
Part 4: The Man Behind the Vault
“Ethan!”
Ariana’s scream echoed through the underground chamber.
The emergency lights flickered back on one by one.
The vault door stood completely open.
Marcus was on the floor, clutching his wounded shoulder.
Ethan was gone.
Ariana spun around frantically.
“Where is he?”
Marcus struggled to stand.
“I don’t know.”
“You were standing right beside him!”
“I know!”
“Then where did he go?”
Marcus looked toward the vault.
“He didn’t disappear.”
Ariana stared at him.
“What?”
“He was taken.”
Her mother’s face suddenly turned white.
“No.”
Ariana looked at her.
“You know who took him.”
The woman said nothing.
“Mom!”
She finally whispered:
“They’ve found him.”
“Who?”
“The people your father spent his entire life running from.”
Ariana stepped toward her.
“Who are they?”
Before her mother could answer, a metallic sound echoed from inside the vault.
Ariana turned.
Something was moving.
Marcus immediately raised his weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
Ariana ignored him.
She ran into the vault.
The room was enormous.
Rows of steel cabinets stretched into the darkness. Banks of old computers lined the walls. Documents filled glass cases. Hundreds of sealed boxes were stacked from floor to ceiling.
But Ethan was nowhere.
Then Ariana noticed something on the floor.
Ethan’s black card.
She picked it up.
Her hands began trembling.
A small drop of blood was visible on the corner.
“Ethan…”
Marcus entered behind her.
“Don’t touch anything.”
Ariana turned.
“He left this.”
Marcus examined the card.
“No.”
“What?”
“He didn’t leave it.”
Marcus pointed toward the floor.
“There are footprints.”
Ariana looked down.
Two sets.
One belonged to Ethan.
The other belonged to someone wearing heavy boots.
The footprints led toward the back wall.
Then stopped.
Marcus frowned.
“There’s a hidden passage.”
Ariana looked around.
“Where?”
Marcus pressed his hand against the wall.
Nothing.
Then Ariana noticed something.
A small symbol had been carved into the metal.
The same symbol that appeared on the black card.
She placed the card against it.
A click sounded.
A section of the wall slid open.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Ariana looked at Marcus.
“I’m going.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Absolutely not.”
“My fiancé is down there.”
“Which is exactly why you shouldn’t go alone.”
Ariana turned toward her mother.
“What about you?”
Her mother looked frightened.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve already made this mistake once.”
Ariana stared at her.
“What mistake?”
Her mother lowered her eyes.
“I trusted your father.”
Ariana froze.
“You loved him.”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
Her mother slowly sat down.
“He betrayed me.”
Marcus looked away.
Ariana’s voice softened.
“How?”
Her mother wiped her tears.
“Because your father wasn’t the man you think he was.”
She pointed toward the tunnel.
“And neither is Ethan.”
Ariana stopped breathing.
“What does that mean?”
But before her mother could explain, a loud metallic door slammed somewhere deep underground.
Marcus looked toward the tunnel.
“We’re out of time.”
Ariana grabbed a flashlight.
“Let’s go.”
They entered the passage.
Behind them, Ariana’s mother remained alone inside the vault.
She stared at the black card.
Then whispered:
“I’m sorry, Ethan.”
The tunnel stretched beneath the old house.
It was cold and damp.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
Marcus walked ahead while Ariana followed closely behind.
After several minutes, Ariana noticed something scratched into the wall.
Names.
Dozens of them.
Some had been crossed out.
Others were followed by dates.
“What are these?”
Marcus stopped.
“People.”
“People who?”
“People who tried to find the vault.”
Ariana’s stomach tightened.
“How many?”
Marcus counted silently.
“Thirty-two.”
“Thirty-two people?”
“Thirty-two confirmed.”
Ariana stared at the names.
Then she noticed one that made her stop.
Ethan Carter.
Beside it was today’s date.
She looked at Marcus.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus stared at the wall.
“He wasn’t supposed to be here.”
“What does that mean?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Ariana pointed at the name.
“Someone wrote this before Ethan disappeared.”
Marcus slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then they knew he would be taken.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Marcus looked down the tunnel.
“I think we’re about to find out.”
They continued walking.
After another hundred yards, the tunnel opened into a massive underground facility.
Ariana stopped in shock.
It looked nothing like the old house above them.
There were computers.
Security doors.
Medical equipment.
Observation rooms.
And dozens of monitors.
One screen showed live footage of Ethan.
He was sitting in a chair inside a dark room.
His hands were restrained.
Ariana ran toward the monitor.
“Ethan!”
He couldn’t hear her.
A man entered the room behind him.
Ariana immediately recognized him.
It was the man from the photograph.
The elderly stranger.
The same man who had warned them at the station.
Marcus whispered:
“Robert Vale.”
Ariana looked at him.
“You know him?”
“I thought he was dead.”
On the screen, Robert placed a chair in front of Ethan.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Ethan looked furious.
“Who are you?”
Robert smiled.
“You really don’t remember me?”
Ethan stared at him.
“No.”
“You were twelve.”
Robert leaned closer.
“I was there the night your father disappeared.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“My father didn’t disappear.”
Robert laughed softly.
“That’s what they told you.”
Ethan pulled against the restraints.
“Where is he?”
Robert’s smile vanished.
“Closer than you think.”
Meanwhile, Ariana turned toward Marcus.
“Get him out.”
Marcus examined the control room.
“I’m trying.”
“There must be a way.”
“These systems are encrypted.”
“Then break them.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I can’t.”
Ariana grabbed his arm.
“You’ve been working with these people.”
Marcus looked shocked.
“What?”
“You knew about Helix.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the vault.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Ethan’s father.”
Marcus was silent.
Ariana’s eyes filled with anger.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Marcus sighed.
“I was ordered to protect Ethan.”
“By whom?”
“His father.”
Ariana stared at him.
“Before he died?”
Marcus shook his head.
“After.”
The room became silent.
“After?” Ariana repeated.
Marcus nodded.
“Your father gave me instructions years after everyone believed he was dead.”
Ariana stepped backward.
“That means…”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at the monitor showing Ethan.
“Your father may still be alive.”
Ariana stared at the screen.
Robert was speaking to Ethan again.
“You need to understand something.”
Ethan glared at him.
“I understand that you’re a criminal.”
Robert smiled.
“Perhaps.”
He leaned forward.
“But I’m not the one who killed your father.”
Ethan froze.
Robert continued.
“Your father is alive.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“Where?”
Robert pointed toward the camera.
“He’s been waiting for you.”
Suddenly the screen changed.
A second camera feed appeared.
A man sat alone in a dark room.
His face was older.
His hair was gray.
But there was no doubt.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“My God.”
Ariana covered her mouth.
Marcus whispered:
“Edward Carter.”
Ethan’s father looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
“Son.”
Ethan’s face collapsed.
For seventeen years, he had believed his father was dead.
Now he was looking at him.
Alive.
Older.
But alive.
“Why?”
Edward’s voice came through the speakers.
“Because if I had returned, they would have killed you.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Who?”
Edward looked toward someone standing outside the camera’s view.
His expression changed.
Fear appeared in his eyes.
“The people who control Helix.”
Robert suddenly interrupted the transmission.
“That’s enough.”
The screen went black.
Ethan shouted.
“Bring him back!”
Robert turned toward him.
“Your father has been given one chance to survive.”
“What chance?”
“You.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What do you want?”
Robert smiled.
“The Carter Vault.”
“I don’t know how to open it.”
“You already did.”
Ethan looked confused.
Robert pointed toward the black card.
“You opened it because you’re one of the two heirs.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Who is the other?”
Robert smiled.
“You know exactly who.”
Ariana stepped toward the monitor.
“Me.”
Robert turned toward the camera.
For the first time, he looked directly at Ariana.
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
Robert’s voice became quiet.
“Because your father wasn’t Edward Carter.”
Ariana froze.
“What?”
Robert continued.
“Your father was the man who created Helix.”
Ariana shook her head.
“My father abandoned us.”
“No.”
“He died.”
“No.”
“My mother told me—”
“Your mother lied.”
Ariana’s eyes filled with tears.
Robert looked at her.
“Your real father is the reason your parents separated you from Ethan.”
Ariana whispered:
“Who is he?”
Robert didn’t answer.
Instead, another screen turned on.
A photograph appeared.
Ariana’s mother stood beside a man.
Ariana stared.
She had seen him before.
In the childhood photographs.
In the documents.
In her fragmented memories.
She suddenly remembered something.
A man’s voice.
A hand holding hers.
A sentence whispered when she was little.
“Never tell them your real name.”
Ariana staggered backward.
“I remember him.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?”
Ariana pointed at the photograph.
“That’s my father.”
Robert nodded.
“And now you know why everyone was afraid of you.”
Ariana’s voice shook.
“Who is he?”
Robert looked toward the door.
Before he could answer, every alarm in the facility began screaming.
Red lights flashed.
Marcus immediately turned.
“We have company.”
“What kind?”
“Armed.”
Ariana looked toward the tunnel.
“How many?”
Marcus checked the security feed.
“At least twenty.”
Robert looked genuinely frightened for the first time.
“They found us.”
Ariana stared at him.
“Who?”
Robert answered:
“Helix.”
The facility shook as an explosion tore through the upper level.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Marcus grabbed Ariana.
“We need to move.”
“What about Ethan?”
“We’re not leaving him.”
They rushed toward the room where Ethan was being held.
But when they arrived, the room was empty.
The restraints were broken.
The chair had been overturned.
Ethan was gone.
Ariana’s heart sank.
“No.”
Marcus examined the floor.
“There’s blood.”
Ariana dropped to her knees.
“Is it his?”
Marcus touched it.
“I don’t know.”
Ariana looked around desperately.
Then she noticed something written on the wall.
Three words.
TRUST YOUR BROTHER.
She stared at them.
“My brother?”
Marcus looked at her.
“What brother?”
Ariana slowly turned.
“That’s what I want to know.”
Suddenly someone grabbed her from behind.
She screamed.
Marcus raised his weapon.
But before he could fire, the lights went out.
A man’s voice whispered in Ariana’s ear.
“Don’t be afraid.”
She froze.
She knew that voice.
It was Ethan.
“Ethan?”
He released her.
The emergency lights came back on.
Ethan stood in front of her.
But something was different.
His clothes were covered in dust.
There was blood on his forehead.
And in his hand was a folder.
Ariana rushed toward him.
“Are you okay?”
Ethan nodded.
“I’m fine.”
“What happened?”
“I escaped.”
“How?”
Ethan looked toward Robert.
“He helped me.”
Robert smiled.
But Marcus immediately raised his weapon.
“Don’t trust him.”
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Why?”
“Because Robert Vale has been lying to us.”
Ethan frowned.
“About what?”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Everything.”
Robert’s smile disappeared.
Marcus continued.
“Your father didn’t build Helix.”
Everyone went silent.
“He destroyed it.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
Marcus looked at Ariana.
“And Ariana’s father wasn’t the founder either.”
Robert suddenly stepped backward.
“Marcus…”
But Marcus continued.
“He was the man who took control of Helix after Ethan’s father tried to shut it down.”
Ariana felt sick.
“Who?”
Marcus looked directly at her.
“Your father.”
Ariana shook her head.
“No.”
Marcus nodded.
“Your father became the most powerful man inside Helix.”
“Why would he separate me from my mother?”
“Because he discovered something.”
“What?”
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“That you and Ariana were not just heirs.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“What are we?”
Marcus hesitated.
“You’re both genetically connected to the Carter Vault’s security system.”
Ethan frowned.
“Meaning?”
“The vault wasn’t designed to store money.”
Ariana looked at the endless rows of computers.
“Then what does it store?”
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Every person who has ever been controlled by Helix.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Politicians?”
Marcus nodded.
“Judges.”
Ariana whispered:
“Business leaders.”
“Military officials.”
Marcus continued.
“Even people who are supposed to be untouchable.”
Ethan looked at the vault.
“So the vault is evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Then why does Helix want us?”
Marcus looked at them.
“Because only two people can access the final database.”
Ariana already knew the answer.
“Us.”
Marcus nodded.
“Both of you together.”
Suddenly the entire facility shook again.
This time the ceiling began collapsing.
Robert shouted:
“Move!”
They ran toward the emergency exit.
As they reached the tunnel, Ethan suddenly stopped.
Ariana turned.
“What?”
Ethan looked back toward the vault.
“My father.”
“We have to go.”
“I can’t leave him.”
Robert grabbed Ethan’s arm.
“Your father wants you to leave.”
“How do you know?”
Robert looked at him.
“Because I was there when he recorded his final message.”
Ethan stared.
“Final?”
Robert’s face became grim.
“He knew he might not survive.”
Ethan pulled away.
“Take me to him.”
Robert hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“He’s not where you think he is.”
Before Ethan could ask another question, another explosion rocked the facility.
The tunnel ceiling began collapsing.
Marcus shouted:
“RUN!”
They sprinted toward the surface.
Behind them, the underground facility disappeared beneath tons of concrete.
When they finally emerged outside, rain was pouring again.
Ariana looked back.
The old house was burning.
Everything they had discovered was disappearing.
The vault.
The documents.
The computers.
The evidence.
Gone.
Or so they thought.
Ethan opened the folder he had taken before escaping.
Inside were dozens of documents.
One page caught his attention.
At the top was a photograph.
It showed his father.
Beside him stood Ariana’s mother.
And between them was a baby.
But the document beneath the photograph contained a sentence that made Ethan’s blood run cold.
Subject: Ethan Carter
Status: Not biological son of Edward Carter.
Ethan stared at the page.
Then at Ariana.
He couldn’t speak.
Ariana took the document.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at him.
“Ethan…”
He shook his head.
“No.”
A second document fell from the folder.
It was Ariana’s.
Subject: Ariana Brooks
Status: Biological daughter of Edward Carter.
Ariana stared at the words.
“So…”
Her voice broke.
“If I’m his daughter…”
She looked at Ethan.
“Then who are you?”
Ethan had no answer.
Then another piece of paper slid from the folder.
At the bottom was a name.
A name neither of them had expected.
Father: Nathaniel Carter.
Ethan looked at the name.
He remembered it.
His grandfather.
A man who had supposedly died before Ethan was born.
A man whose portrait had always hung in the Carter mansion.
A man nobody had mentioned in years.
Marcus suddenly looked terrified.
“That’s impossible.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Marcus stared at the document.
“Because Nathaniel Carter wasn’t just your grandfather.”
“Who was he?”
Marcus whispered:
“He founded Helix.”
The rain continued falling.
Ariana stared at Ethan.
Ethan stared at Marcus.
Then a phone began ringing.
It wasn’t Ethan’s.
It wasn’t Ariana’s.
It wasn’t Marcus’s.
It was coming from inside the burning house.
They all looked back.
The phone continued ringing.
Again.
And again.
Finally, someone answered it remotely.
A voice came through the speaker.
An old man’s voice.
Calm.
Powerful.
Alive.
“Hello, Ethan.”
Ethan’s blood turned cold.
“Who is this?”
The voice laughed softly.
“You’ve been asking the wrong question your entire life.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Where is my father?”
The voice replied:
“Forget your father.”
A pause.
“Ask yourself why I created you.”
Ethan’s face went pale.
Ariana grabbed his hand.
The voice continued:
“And if you really want the truth…”
The line went silent for several seconds.
Then the final words came through.
“Come find me.”
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the burning house.
Ariana looked at him.
“What are we going to do?”
Ethan slowly looked down at the black card.
For the first time, the card no longer looked like a symbol of wealth.
It looked like a warning.
He closed his hand around it.
“We find Nathaniel Carter.”
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Then explain.”
Marcus stared into the flames.
“Nathaniel Carter has been officially dead for thirty-two years.”
Ariana’s eyes widened.
“Then who just called us?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because somewhere in the darkness beyond the burning house, a man was watching them.
An old man.
Wearing the same black symbol on his wrist.
He smiled as Ethan held the limitless card in his hand.
Then he whispered:
“Finally.”
And behind him stood another person.
A young man.
Tall.
Silent.
His face remained hidden beneath the hood of his coat.
The old man turned toward him.
“Are you ready to meet your brother?”
The young man slowly lifted his head.
And for the first time, the audience could see his face.
He looked exactly like Ethan.
But there was one difference.
A thin scar ran across his left eye.
He smiled.
“I’ve been waiting my entire life.”
And somewhere in the distance, Ethan’s phone received one final message.
YOU HAVE 72 HOURS.
FIND YOUR BROTHER.
OR ARIANA DIES.
