Keanu Reeves Finds Happiness Again with New Love Alexandra Grant After a Life of Tragedy: The Deaths of His Girlfriend, Daughter, Best Friend, and Sister

Keanu Reeves is a Hollywood star known for a successful acting career, with blockbuster hits such as Speed, The Matrix, Point Break, and John Wick. But behind the screen, his personal life has been marked by immense pain and loss.

When Keanu was just two years old, his father left the family, seeking a new life and abandoning Keanu, his mother, and younger sister, Kim Reeves. Back in October 1993, Keanu lost his best friend, actor River Phoenix, who died suddenly at the age of 23. River collapsed outside a music venue in Hollywood after taking a combination of morphine and cocaine.

River once called Keanu “like a brother to me.” Keanu said, “River was my best friend, and I don’t have many close friends like that.” The two had starred together in My Own Private Idaho in 1991, just two years before River’s death.

At the time of River’s death, Keanu was filming Speed alongside Sandra Bullock. Sandra recalled their time together, saying, “I think Keanu went through so much, even though he never showed it. He carried a huge sadness inside.”

In 1999, Keanu’s girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, suffered a miscarriage at eight months pregnant. The couple had been eagerly awaiting the birth of their baby girl, whom they had named Ava Archer Syme-Reeves. But tragedy struck when Ava was stillborn, and just weeks later, the grief-stricken couple broke up.

Two years later, in 2001, Jennifer Syme was on her way to a party hosted by rocker Marilyn Manson when she crashed her Jeep into parked cars while driving under the influence. She was ejected from the vehicle and died instantly.

In 2014, while filming John Wick, Keanu admitted: “It was very hard to deal with her death.” That deep personal grief shaped his performance in the movie, where he plays a widowed assassin. “I think it’s part of what made the role work. I understand his sorrow. Grief and loss never truly go away,” he shared.

After so many painful losses, Keanu froze his heart. The public saw a man who was quiet, reserved, and solitary. He didn’t attend parties, avoided relationships, and lived a private, closed-off life for many years. Even in 2017, when Esquire asked him about settling down, the actor—born in 1964—simply replied: “It’s too late. It’s over.”

For the first time in nearly two decades, Keanu appeared on a red carpet this week, hand-in-hand with someone he loved. He looked calm and genuinely happy beside his new partner.

According to Hollywood media, Keanu and Alexandra began dating earlier this year, although their love blossomed from a long-standing friendship. They first met in 2009. Three years later, Alexandra illustrated Keanu’s first poetry book Ode to Happiness. In 2016, they collaborated again on Shadows. Later, they co-founded a publishing house, X Artists’ Books.

Alexandra Grant, 46, is described by friends as a kind, warm, understanding woman with excellent communication skills. She’s not just a painter but also a philanthropist. According to a close friend, Alexandra’s emotional sensitivity has helped Keanu open up and begin healing from his painful past. “He lived in darkness for too long, but her compassionate soul and support helped him turn his life around.
