According to FlixPatrol, it was the eighth-most-watched title on the global Prime Video charts on October 18, when the leader board was topped by Culpa Nuestra, the third installment in the Culpables trilogy. Produced on a reported budget of $3 million, Pig was released by Neon in 2021, grossing just over $4.5 million worldwide. It wasn’t exactly a box office hit, but critics (and Quentin Tarantino) were unanimous in their praise of Cage’s central performance, and Sarnoski’s direction. Pig holds a near-perfect 97% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Like the animal itself, Pig defies the hogwash of expectations with a beautiful odyssey of loss and love anchored by Nicolas Cage’s affectingly raw performance.”
The movie features Cage as a reclusive wild mushroom forager, whose mysterious past is gradually revealed over the course of an hour and a half. The plot kicks into gear when the protagonist’s pet pig is kidnapped by home invaders, sending him on a quest to find the pig and bring him back. The centerpiece of the movie is an emotionally charged scene in which Cage’s character visits a haute cuisine restaurant, and delivers a speech that ranks among the best of all time. Even Cage was mightily impressed by his own performance, ranking Pig as his favorite of all the films he’s been in.

He was, however, overlooked by The Academy. That said, Cage was recognized by dozens of critics’ associations that year. A 1990s icon who lost his way for a few years, Cage has since delivered stand-out performances in movies such as Renfield, and more recently, Longlegs. He’ll next star as John Madden in David O. Russell‘s upcoming biopic, and as Spider-Man Noir in an upcoming live-action series. You can watch Pig at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
