Michael Jordan wanted to find a legal way to pay a portion of his pay packet to his teammate, who he is now not on great terms with.

Six-time NBA champion Jordan is believed to have made a whopping $93.7 million from his career on the court, having become the first player to sign a contract worth over $20 million and $30 million.

In the 1997/98 season, where the Chicago Bulls completed a second three-peat, Jordan was paid $33,140,000 and was the top earner in the league by some distance.

However, Scottie Pippen also played an integral role in the Bulls’ six titles in an eight-year period – though he wasn’t quite compensated.

Though he was one of the very best in his pomp, Pippen reportedly only received around $2.57 million per season while linking up with Jordan.

That’s because the 59-year-old had committed to a seven-year contract worth $18million back in 1991.

And knowing his worth, Jordan claimed Pippen was “underpaid” and he wanted to find a way in which he could help give him the pay packet he deserved.

“I wish there was some way legally that I could give him some of the money that he totally deserves as a player,” Jordan said in an interview with Cheryl Raye-Stout.

“He’s totally underpaid. For years, I was underpaid, but I played it out, and I think he’s going to play it out too. At the end of three years, I hope they reward him with a just and fair contract.”

Pippen later left in a sign-and-trade deal to the Houston Rockets, who paid him a much-improved $11 million per year.

Despite wanting to resolve his contract issues, the dynamic duo have not been on great terms recent years.

Pippen, who said he was never friends with Jordan despite their relationship on the court, was not happy with how he was made to look in the ‘Last Dance’ documentary on Netflix.

He said they had an interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic but described it as “good and final” and stressed that Jordan was a “difficult person to deal with” who “didn’t really bond with players”.

To make matters worse, Pippen’s ex wife Larsa was in a relationship with Michael Jordan’s son Marcus for two years.

Commenting on their beef earlier this month, their former Bulls teammate Bill Cartwright told TMZ: “Nah, those guys are old guys now.

“It’s like all that happened in the ’90s. Shouldn’t we be past that by now? Yeah, so it’s kinda … nonsense.”
