Davido Declares: “I Am Not a Nigerian, I Am an American from Atlanta”

In a surprising revelation, the king of Afrobeat, Davido, has clarified his cultural identity, stating, “I am not a Nigerian, I am an American from Atlanta.” During a recent interview, the renowned artist explained the nuances of his background and how they relate to his connection with Nigeria.
Davido elaborated on the complexities of identity within Nigerian culture, saying, “In the Nigerian culture, you’re not really from where you’re born. You’re from where your parents are from.” He emphasized that his only link to Nigeria stems from his parents’ heritage, as he was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. “I only went there when my dad relocated to Nigeria,” he added.
The artist further explained that his children, who were also born in Atlanta, do not identify as Nigerians either. “All my kids are not Nigerians too because they were born in Atlanta. The only reason why they’re related to Nigeria is because me and my wife are from Nigeria,” he stated. He highlighted that his entire family, including his siblings and relatives, are based in Atlanta, reinforcing his assertion that they do not identify as Nigerians.
Davido’s candid remarks have sparked discussions about cultural identity and the privileges of wealth. He jokingly noted, “To be a rich kid is too sweet sha. You will just wake up one day and say anything that makes you happy.”
This statement has resonated with many fans and followers, showcasing Davido’s unique perspective on his upbringing and cultural ties. As one of the leading figures in the Afrobeat genre, his insights not only reflect his personal experiences but also shed light on the broader conversation surrounding identity in a globalized world.
