Gymnastics fans may not have seen the last of three-time Olympic gold medallist Gabby Douglas of the United States in competition.

The 27-year-old announced on Wednesday (29 May) that she would not take part in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, which was to have been the next step in her improbable comeback after nearly eight years away from competition. But on Sunday morning (2 June), Douglas took to Instagram to thank her supporters and promised more to come.

“Wow, what a journey. First off, I just wanted to say that I am forever grateful for all of your support, grace, and love. It truly has touched my heart,” Douglas wrote. “I’m sad to say that due to a foot injury during practice, I will not be able to continue my 2024 journey. This may be the end of this chapter but not the end of my gymnastics story.

“Thank you all for being with me on this journey and lifting me up on my lowest days, I love you all so much!” she concluded.
