Owens, who married the Olympic legend last year, was in action for the Chicago Bears during their home opener against the Tennessee Titans at Soldier Field Saturday.
The gymnast, who added another three gold medals and a solver to haul Olympic haul in Paris last month, didn’t appear to be in the Windy City to cheer on her NFL beau but she was still supporting him from afar. And the safety gave the Olympic legend more than enough to cheer for as he found the endzone. With the Bears down 17-3 with nine minutes left on the clock in the third quarter, the special teams player scored the franchise’s first touchdown of the season and the second of his career.
Simone Biles and husband Jonathan Owens had cause for celebration during Week 1
The Olympic legend went wild on social media as she reacted to her husband’s touchdown Responding to a clip of the play on X, formerly known as Twitter, the gymnastic icon wrote: ‘I ALMOST HD A HEART ATTACK.’
She also shared the clip on her Instagram story, adding: ‘LFG!! TOUCHDOWN FOR HUBBY.’ Owens recovered a blocked punt in the second half and ran it all the way into the endzone. It clawed the score to 17-10 for the Bears, who went on to clinch an incredible 24-17 comeback win in quarterback Caleb Williams’ NFL debut.
Chicago granted Owens leave from training camp this summer so he could make the journey to Paris to support Biles at her third Olympic Games but since her triumph the gymnast has taken over the cheerleader duties.
Biles watched a Bears preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Soldier Field on August 17.
However, the 27-year-old came under fire for accidentally committing a fashion – and football faux-pas when she wore an outdated jacket featuring black-and-white printed images of Owens in action for the Green Bay Packers – the Bears’ longstanding fierce rivals and his former team. She brushed off the criticism, assuring fans last week that she has ‘plenty [of Bears gear] now,’ via TMZ.
Owens celebrates after scoring during the third quarter of the Bears season opener Sunday
The Chicago safety recorded the Bears’ first touchdown of the 2024 NFL season But when we’ll get to see Biles repping her new Bears merch remains a mystery. She recently revealed to her adoring fans that she will not be able to attend as many of her husband’s NFL games this season due to her post-Olympic duties. Biles is currently preparing for the Gold Over America Tour, which forced to her to bid farewell to Owens last week as he headed back to Chicago for the kickoff of the season. The tour, a traveling gymnastics exhibition which will feature a host of gymnastic stars including Biles and her gold-medal-winning USA teammates, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera, will kick off on September 16 in Oceanside, California. It will make 30 stops across the United States, finishing in Detroit on November 3, which coincides with Week 9 of the NFL schedule – the midpoint of the regular season. However, Biles may be able to catch the second half of the calendar and the postseason if Chicago secures a playoff spot.
