Prince William reportedly had a huge request denied by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, the second after he married Kate Middleton in 2011, according to The Telegraph.

After his wedding, William had hoped to continue using Prince William as his name instead of the Duke of Cambridge, and he wanted Kate to become Princess Catherine.

However, the queen was not in favour of this.

Princesses usually receive their titles at birth and not through marriage.

Royal historian Kenneth Rose stated that it up to the queen what title she gives.

And while there have been one or two exceptions because Kate is a commoner, she could not be known as Princess Catherine, Rose said.

When Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, died, the queen gave the Duchess of Gloucester the title Princess Alice.

This was, though, to reward her for years of loyal service.

Instead of becoming Princess Catherine after their wedding, Kate became Princess William of Wales, the feminine form of William’s title, as well as the Duchess of Cambridge
