Hollywood’s Identity Crisis: Has Casting Lost Its Way?
The world of cinema has long been a powerful platform for storytelling, capable of transporting audiences into diverse, faraway worlds and giving them a glimpse of lives they’ve never lived. But as the years go by, Hollywood’s once-celebrated art form has begun to feel more like a corporate operation obsessed with checking boxes than a space for genuine creativity. The debate over diversity and inclusivity in casting has exploded, leaving many to wonder whether the industry has lost sight of what truly matters – the art of acting itself.
At the center of this controversy is the increasingly rigid notion of “authenticity” when it comes to actors and their roles. What was once considered one of the cornerstones of acting – the ability to disappear into a character – has now become marred by a set of identity politics that puts personal experiences above artistic merit. In this shifting landscape, casting decisions are no longer guided by a director’s vision or the actor’s ability to embody a role. Instead, they are often influenced by a desire to ensure that every character is played by someone who shares their background or experiences, regardless of the actor’s talent or fit for the role.
The Changing Nature of Acting
For over a century, acting was about transformation. Actors were expected to vanish into the character they portrayed, to become someone else entirely. Whether they were portraying someone from a different race, nationality, gender, or even time period, the magic of acting was its ability to create an illusion, to make the audience forget the actor’s real identity and embrace the person they were playing. The craft of acting was built on this illusion, where the true art was in making the character believable, relatable, and, above all, human.
In today’s Hollywood, however, things have started to change. The most recent controversies surrounding casting choices reflect the growing influence of identity politics, with many actors being praised or criticized based not just on their talent but also on their background. In a world where diversity is seen as the highest priority, the lines between artistic freedom and political correctness are becoming increasingly blurred. The question now being asked is simple: Has Hollywood lost sight of what acting is truly about?
The Double Standards in Hollywood’s Approach to Casting
One of the most glaring examples of this new approach to casting is the increasing calls for “appropriate” casting based on identity. The recent backlash against James Franco for playing Fidel Castro, despite being non-Latino, is a perfect example of this new trend. Actors are now being told that unless they share the same background as the character they are playing, they are no longer eligible for the role. In Franco’s case, actor John Leguizamo’s tweet calling for a boycott of the film drew attention to the growing perception that such casting decisions are inherently wrong.
But this raises a larger issue. If identity is now the defining factor in casting, what does this mean for acting as a profession? The very core of acting is about stepping outside of oneself to bring another person’s story to life. By restricting actors to only play characters that align with their own personal identity, we risk reducing the craft of acting to little more than a form of performance art defined by the actor’s demographics rather than their ability to transform and embody the character.

Take John Leguizamo himself, who has portrayed characters from different backgrounds throughout his career. He is not Venetian, yet he played a Venetian in a film. He is not a French little person, yet he portrayed one. These roles, though not part of his own identity, were hailed for his ability to immerse himself in them and bring something new to the table. Should Leguizamo, or any actor for that matter, be restricted to only playing characters who share his exact background? If we follow this logic, we would have to question whether it’s acceptable for an actor to play a character of a different race, gender, or sexual orientation at all.
Acting, by its nature, is appropriation. The very definition of acting is to borrow someone else’s life, history, pain, and experiences and make them feel real. That’s the magic of the craft. To suddenly impose limitations on this essential element of acting is not only a disservice to the art form, but it also stifles creativity. It reduces actors to mere representatives of their demographic group, rather than allowing them the freedom to tell a story through the lens of the character they are playing.
Hollywood’s Identity Politics: A Disservice to the Art of Acting
The backlash against casting decisions has become increasingly polarized, with those in favor of more inclusivity pushing for changes and those in favor of artistic freedom advocating for the return to traditional casting practices. But what is often lost in these debates is the fact that acting should not be about who plays what role based on their personal background or identity. Acting is about the ability to step into someone else’s shoes, to walk in their life, and to make the audience believe in that transformation.
When Hollywood started prioritizing political correctness over artistic merit, it lost sight of the very essence of what made films great in the first place: storytelling. Movies should challenge boundaries, provoke thought, and explore new ideas. But when casting decisions are made based on who fits the identity of the character, rather than the best actor for the role, the storytelling process becomes diminished. Movies become less about the story they’re telling and more about appeasing the audience’s desire for moral validation.
This trend of rewarding actors for playing roles that align with the current social script is creating a dangerous precedent. It takes away from the creativity and innovation that has made Hollywood a global cultural powerhouse. Instead of focusing on what makes an actor the best choice for the role, Hollywood is increasingly focused on what is deemed “acceptable” based on political correctness. This shift is not only damaging to the art of acting, but it’s also damaging to the films themselves.
The Oscars: A Symbol of Hollywood’s Failures
The Oscars, once the gold standard for recognizing excellence in film, have become a reflection of Hollywood’s own identity crisis. Time and again, the Academy has been criticized for its lack of diversity, but this focus on diversity has also led to the neglect of the true essence of cinema. The Oscars, rather than rewarding the best work, are increasingly rewarding films and performances that fit the current political narrative. The result is an industry that has lost its way, replacing artistic bravery with the pursuit of social validation.
Some of the greatest films in history have been overlooked by the Academy. Films like Citizen Kane, It’s a Wonderful Life, Pulp Fiction, and Raging Bull were all ignored in favor of more socially acceptable, politically correct choices. These films were groundbreaking, intellectually honest, and brave, yet they failed to win the ultimate recognition. The same pattern appears in the acting categories, where legends like Al Pacino were snubbed for years before finally receiving recognition for a performance that was far from his best work.
The Academy’s focus on diversity and inclusivity has led to a situation where films are being cast for the wrong reasons. Instead of casting based on talent and suitability for the role, Hollywood is increasingly casting based on identity politics. This has led to a rise in what is known as the “makeup Oscar,” where an actor wins for a performance that is seen as politically correct, but not necessarily the best work of their career. The problem with this approach is that it undermines the true meaning of acting – the ability to disappear into a role, to make the audience forget the actor’s real identity, and to believe in the character they are portraying.
The Future of Hollywood: A Return to Merit and Creativity
It’s time for Hollywood to reexamine its priorities. The obsession with diversity and inclusivity should not come at the cost of artistic merit. Movies should be about telling stories, pushing boundaries, and exploring new ideas. Acting should be about transformation, about taking on someone else’s life and making it feel real. If Hollywood continues down this path of self-censorship and identity policing, it risks losing the very essence of what makes cinema great.
Hollywood’s focus should be on finding the best actor for the role, not the actor who fits the identity of the character. Actors should be free to take on any role, regardless of their personal background or identity, as long as they have the talent and skill to bring the character to life. It’s time to stop treating actors like representatives of their identity and start treating them as artists who can create something beautiful, transformative, and meaningful.
In the end, Hollywood needs to stop pretending that every creative choice needs to pass through a political filter. It needs to return to the art of acting – to the art of storytelling. Only then will the industry be able to create films that are truly unforgettable.
