West urged his audience to study this document, claiming that it provides critical insights into the goals and methods of radical Islamists within the U.S. The memorandum, he argued, clearly lays out a plan for the gradual infiltration of American institutions and a move towards a more Islamic society.
West’s use of the Muslim Brotherhood’s document, alongside his reference to the strategic goals of figures like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, helped reinforce his view that Islamism is an ideology that transcends cultural or religious boundaries and poses a direct threat to Western values.
Historical Roots and the Medina Phase
One of the key points that West raised in his critique was the historical development of Islam itself. He argued that there was a distinct shift in the teachings of Islam that occurred during the Prophet Muhammad’s life, moving from a peaceful phase to a more militant and expansionist one. According to West, the Quran’s verses became more violent after the migration to Medina in 622 AD, marking what he referred to as the “Medina phase.” It was during this phase, West argued, that the more violent and political aspects of Islam took shape—an argument that has been cited by critics of Islam for centuries.
In particular, West emphasized the concept of naskh (abrogation) in Islamic jurisprudence, which holds that later verses of the Quran supersede earlier ones. This concept, he argued, has led to the justification of violence and jihad by extremists who choose to interpret the Quran through the lens of these later, more violent passages. He pointed out that many of these radical ideologies find support not just in fringe groups but also in mainstream Islamic discourse, often leading to violent interpretations of Islam that have fueled terrorism around the globe.
The Challenge of Political Correctness
West’s message was clear: in order to address the threat posed by radical Islam and Islamism, Americans must be willing to engage in difficult, uncomfortable conversations about the nature of these ideologies. His frustration with political correctness was palpable as he condemned the reluctance of many to discuss the violent aspects of Islam for fear of being labeled Islamophobic or racist.
“It’s all about the ideas,” West explained. “There are ideas posited. It’s a worldview. And if that worldview is flawed, it can be criticized.” For him, the problem lies in the fact that certain factions within Islam are not only advocating for political dominance but also enacting violence based on their interpretation of Islamic texts.
