A New “Great Wall”: Inside the Radical Movement Seeking to Replicate China’s Religious Crackdown in America
ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA — On a brisk Tuesday afternoon, the usual quiet of a suburban cul-de-sac was shattered not by the sound of construction, but by the rhythmic thud of a hydraulic excavator. As the dust settled over what was meant to be the community’s first Islamic center, a small but vocal crowd gathered across the street. They weren’t there to protest the noise; they were there to celebrate the demolition.

“If China can do it to preserve their culture, why can’t we?” asks Mark H., a local organizer who declined to give his last name, citing “retribution from the radical left.” He points to a viral video on his phone—one of thousands circulating in a growing digital ecosystem that hails Beijing’s treatment of its Muslim minority as a blueprint for Western survival.
The sentiment is part of a burgeoning, controversial movement in the United States: the “Sinification” of American border and cultural policy. It is a philosophy that marries old-school American nativism with an unlikely admiration for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) authoritarian grip on religious expression.
The Mirror of Xinjiang
For decades, the United States has officially condemned China’s treatment of the Uyghur population in Xinjiang. The State Department has characterized the mass detentions, surveillance, and “re-education” camps as a form of genocide. However, a different narrative is taking root in the darker corners of American social media—one that views Beijing not as a human rights violator, but as a pragmatic guardian of national identity.
The rhetoric is blunt. Influencers on platforms like X and Telegram are increasingly sharing footage of mosque demolitions in Ningxia and Xinjiang with captions like “The Chinese don’t mess around” and “No Islamic invasion here.”
For this segment of the American right, the “China Model” offers a seductive solution to a perceived crisis. They argue that while European and American cities have become “unrecognizable” due to multiculturalism, China has remained “99.9% Chinese.” To them, the removal of Arabic signage and the bulldozing of minarets are not acts of oppression, but essential maintenance of a “single-race society.”
Statistics and the “Invasion” Narrative
The demographic reality of the United States often takes a backseat to the fervor of these arguments. According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 3.45 million Muslims living in the U.S., making up about 1.1% of the total population. By contrast, China is home to an estimated 20 to 28 million Muslims, or roughly 1.5% to 2% of its population.
Despite the relatively small numbers in the U.S., the “Great Replacement” theory—the idea that white Christians are being systematically replaced by non-white immigrants—has found a powerful new catalyst in the anti-Islam rhetoric coming out of the East.
“They call it a mental illness over there,” says Sarah, a former schoolteacher who joined a “Culture First” rally in Ohio. “In America, we’re told we have to accommodate everyone until our own culture is gone. But you look at Tokyo, you look at Beijing—they don’t have these problems because they don’t allow the infrastructure of the invasion to be built.”
The Double Standard Debate
A central pillar of this movement is the perceived double standard regarding border security and cultural preservation. Proponents frequently point to Japan and China as examples of successful “closed-border” societies.
“When an Asian country wants to keep their culture alive, it’s called ‘tradition,’” says David Reaboi, a national security analyst who has written extensively on the intersection of Islamism and Western politics. “When a Western, Christian country wants to do the same, it’s labeled ‘racism’ or ‘Islamophobia.’ This perceived hypocrisy is driving people to look toward authoritarian models as a last resort.”
This envy of authoritarian efficiency is a radical departure from traditional American conservatism, which historically prioritized religious liberty and limited government. Now, a faction of the movement seems willing to trade the First Amendment for the sledgehammer, arguing that “democracy is being used and abused” by those who wish to see it fail.
The Silence of the Global Stage
The movement also finds fuel in the geopolitical silence of the Muslim world regarding China. While many Islamic nations are quick to condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza or the West Bank, few have raised a finger against Beijing’s “Strike Hard” campaign against the Uyghurs.
In 2019, more than a dozen Muslim-majority countries signed a letter to the UN supporting China’s “remarkable achievements in the field of human rights.” For American hardliners, this silence is proof of a cynical reality: even Muslim leaders recognize China’s strength.
“The world remains silent because China is powerful,” Mark H. says, watching the excavator pull down a wooden frame. “If we want to be respected, we have to stop being the world’s doormat.”
The Cost of “Culture”
Human rights advocates warn that this “admiration of the oppressor” is a dangerous fire to play with. Dr. Aris Teon, a researcher specializing in East Asian demographics, argues that the “99.9% Chinese” statistic is a manufactured myth used to justify the erasure of indigenous cultures.
“China is not a monolith,” Teon explains. “It is a collection of diverse ethnicities and histories that are being forcibly homogenized by a central party. When Americans point to this as an ideal, they are essentially advocating for the destruction of the very pluralism that defines the American experiment.”
The legal hurdles for such a movement in the U.S. remain insurmountable for now. The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) and the First Amendment provide robust protections for the construction of mosques and the practice of faith. However, the battle is increasingly moving from the courtroom to the “court of public opinion,” where viral videos of bulldozers in Xinjiang are becoming the new symbols of “strength.”
A House Divided
As evening falls in St. Cloud, the demolition site is quiet. The Islamic center is gone, at least for now, tied up in zoning disputes and local opposition that many suspect is fueled by this new wave of “Sinified” rhetoric.
In the local coffee shops, the debate rages. For some, it is a matter of preserving a way of life they feel is slipping away. For others, it is a terrifying glimpse into a future where American liberty is sacrificed at the altar of “cultural survival.”
The “China Model” may be thousands of miles away, but its echoes are growing louder in the American heartland. Whether the U.S. will remain a beacon of religious freedom or adopt the draconian “re-education” tactics of its greatest rival is a question that is no longer confined to the halls of the State Department. It is being decided, one demolition and one viral video at a time, in the streets of small-town America.
