Suarez leaves open the possibility of returning to the Uruguayan national team for the World Cup.
In an interview with Diario Ovacion, Luis Suarez shared: “The national team is always what you aim for. When the World Cup is approaching, if the team needs you, what will you do? I will never say no to my country.”
The 39-year-old striker said his previous decision to retire from the national team was to give opportunities to the next generation, and admitted that he once felt he could no longer contribute much to the team. However, he emphasized: “If they need me, I will never refuse. That is impossible, as long as I am still playing.”
Suarez leaves open the possibility of returning to the Uruguay national team for the World Cup.
The former Barcelona striker officially retired from the Uruguay national team in September 2024 as the greatest goalscorer in history, scoring 69 goals in 143 matches over 17 years.
However, Suarez admitted that leaving the national team has somewhat diminished his passion: “You always keep the desire and the dream, especially to wear the national team jersey. But since leaving, the fire for football in me has somewhat cooled down.”
At club level, Suarez is currently focused on playing for Inter Miami. He recently scored in the 2-2 draw against Austin FC, marking his first goal in the MLS 2026 season.
Coach Javier Mascherano praised his performance: “I think Luis played very well, playing an important role in the equalizer. Besides the goal, he also had a few other dangerous opportunities.”
According to the schedule, Suarez and Inter Miami will be back in action this weekend in their clash against New York Red Bulls.
