The annual Oakwood Dog Show was the biggest event in town. For weeks, posters of perfectly groomed poodles, elegant retrievers, and regal shepherds had decorated every shop window. Children whispered about the agility course, and adults debated which dog would win Best in Show this year.

Eight-year-old Lily had dreamed of entering the competition since she was five. She and her German Shepherd, Rex, were inseparable. Rex wasn’t a show dog—he was big, a bit clumsy, and his ears never stood quite straight. But to Lily, he was perfect.

Next was the tunnel. Rex hesitated—he’d always been wary of small spaces. Lily knelt down, peering into the tunnel.

Rex sniffed the entrance, then crawled through, emerging on the other side with a triumphant bark. Lily clapped for him, and a few people in the crowd did too.

The weaving poles were next. Rex lumbered through them, not gracefully, but carefully, keeping his eyes on Lily the whole time. When they reached the end, Lily threw her arms around his neck.

The final challenge was the trick round. The other dogs had performed spins, jumps, and even played dead. Lily’s turn came. She took a deep breath, remembering their secret routine.

She whistled, and Rex sat. She raised her hand, and Rex barked once. Then, to everyone’s surprise, Rex stood on his hind legs and walked three steps, just as they’d practiced in the backyard. The crowd gasped.

But Lily wasn’t finished. She pulled a toy piano from her backpack and set it on the ground.

Rex barked and placed his front paw on the keys. He pressed them, making a series of musical notes. The crowd burst into laughter and applause. Rex played a little tune—clumsy, but recognizable. Lily grinned from ear to ear.
