Carolina Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky announced to media that the team has held preliminary contract discussions with newly acquired forward Mikko Rantanen.
Tulsky did mention he doesn’t expect any long-term agreement to happen overnight, and doesn’t expect Rantanen to sign the next eight-years of his life away without knowing what he’s getting into.
Additionally, Tulsky revealed that the Hurricanes and Avalanche held trade discussions involving Rantanen this past summer, with talks picking up these past 6-8 weeks.

“It’s not going to happen overnight,” Tulsky explained. “We want Mikko to feel comfortable with his decision and make sure it’s the right fit for him long-term.”
In an interesting twist, Tulsky also disclosed that the Hurricanes had engaged in trade talks with the Colorado Avalanche involving Rantanen as early as this past summer. However, those discussions only began to intensify in the last 6-8 weeks, leading to Rantanen’s eventual acquisition by Carolina.
The trade has already generated significant excitement among Hurricanes fans, but it seems both sides are taking a patient approach to ensure the deal is mutually beneficial. With the contract talks still ongoing, it’s clear that Rantanen’s future in Carolina is something the team is committed to getting right.
