Breaking News: Shocking Rumour Sparks Buzz Around Avalanche Star Mikko Rantanen

Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen finds himself at the center of swirling speculation as a wild rumor has thrust him into the media spotlight. With the NHL trade deadline on the horizon and Rantanen’s future in question, the hockey world is abuzz with speculation about the star player’s fate.

Rantanen is currently in the final season of a six-year, $55.5 million contract, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $9.25 million. As one of the NHL’s premier forwards, he’s expected to secure a lucrative contract in his next deal, with many predicting his salary could reach up to $14 million annually. This would mark a significant increase, sparking debates over whether the Avalanche can—or should—meet those demands.

The financial dynamics add another layer of complexity. While Colorado has the cap flexibility to retain Rantanen, his potential salary could surpass Nathan MacKinnon’s $12.6 million AAV, making some question whether Rantanen deserves to eclipse the team’s cornerstone player in earnings.

As the March 7 trade deadline approaches, speculation about Rantanen’s future intensifies. If the Avalanche fail to secure a new deal with him by the offseason, they risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1 without any compensation. This scenario has prompted analysts and fans alike to consider the possibility of a trade to avoid such a costly outcome.

Earlier this month, TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie ranked Rantanen 20th on his list of 25 players likely to be traded before the deadline. Lavoie suggested that if Colorado is unwilling or unable to meet Rantanen’s contract demands, the team could look to maximise his trade value rather than risk losing him for nothing.

“Should the Avalanche determine they cannot accommodate Rantanen’s demands, they may be inclined to secure his value through a trade instead of letting him slip away on July 1,” Lavoie explained.

Rantanen, however, has made it clear that he won’t entertain contract negotiations during the season. This stance places added pressure on Colorado’s front office, which could face a difficult decision in the coming months.

Rantanen’s on-ice performance this season only heightens his value. With an impressive 24 goals and 58 points in 41 games, he’s been instrumental in the Avalanche’s push for the playoffs. Currently occupying the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, the team’s postseason aspirations remain alive.

If Colorado’s playoff hopes falter, trading Rantanen could become a reality—a move that would send shockwaves through the NHL and redefine the Avalanche’s roster for years to come.
