Canadiens’ comeback falls short after rookie defenseman’s early mistakes prove costly

.
A blistering start from the Canadiens as they create scoring chances left and right within the first 40 seconds. It’s clear they’re fired up and ready to take on the Blackhawks.
However, things don’t kick off quite as well for Jayden Struble. It’s his first game back in three weeks, and he quickly lands in the penalty box alongside Arber Xhekaj, who gets called for tripping.
Chicago capitalizes on the two-man advantage, setting up Tyler Bertuzzi for the opening goal during the five-on-three power play.
Xhekaj tries to swing the momentum by dropping the gloves with Pat Maroon and scores a decisive win in the fight – a show of old-school grit that gets the crowd buzzing.
Despite the effort, it’s the Blackhawks who keep pressing Canadian goalie Samuel Montembeault with shots, and it doesn’t help that Alexandre Carrier gets flagged for cross-checking. Jake Evans and Joel Armia step up big time on the penalty kill, eating up crucial time with the puck in Chicago’s zone.
Once the penalties clear, the Canadiens find their rhythm. They exploit a glaring mistake by the Blackhawks, leaving Cole Caufield free to net his 20th goal of the season, tying the game.
Letting Caufield roam unchecked is a mistake, and Chicago pays for it. The period ends with a slight sigh of relief for Montreal, despite a shaky start dominated by penalties.
Second Period
Lane Hutson is all over the ice, showcasing his defensive smarts as he foresees a turnover, backtracks, and pounces on the puck like a hawk. He reignites the Canadiens’ attack and later demonstrates some slick moves into Chicago’s slot only to defer to Christian Dvorak instead of taking a real chance at the net—a move he’d probably rethink given a do-over.
The Blackhawks momentarily put the puck past Montembeault, but the referees immediately wave it off due to some overzealous poking from under the goalie’s glove. Caufield is whipping shots from every angle—he’s the goal-scoring machine Montreal is relying on, especially with Patrik Laine sidelined.
An unfortunate lapse sees three Canadiens behind their own net without securing the puck, leaving enough space for Wyatt Kaiser to find Nick Foligno, whose deflection pushes Chicago ahead.
Montreal is getting restless, looking to dominate as Josh Anderson blazes down the ice and tests Arvid Soderblom with a near-breakaway chance. The Canadiens crank up the pressure, and their sheer volume of shots should yield something substantial, yet the scoreboard remains unchanged. Soderblom is denying one chance after another, including a sparkling save on Suzuki as time winds down.
Third Period
The Canadiens start the final period with a power play opportunity that’s more fizzle than fire. Just as they find some footing, Chicago extends their lead, putting Montreal in a two-goal deficit. Suzuki’s shot tantalizingly trickles near the goalline but is whisked away before it can count.
Persistent offensive work draws another penalty, giving Montreal a shot at a comeback. Emil Heineman steps up, demonstrating brilliant hand-eye coordination as he scores with a bat-right-out-of-the-air move, notching his 10th of the season. He’s quickly becoming the Canadiens’ fan-favorite rookie.
It’s a temporary lift as Kaiden Guhle gets penalized for an unconventional piggyback on Taylor Hall—a penalty that halts any building momentum. With under eight minutes to play, Montreal struggles to mount a sufficient challenge, managing only five shots in the period.
The Blackhawks rattle the post, and amidst confusion, they solidify the win shortly after. Montembeault is pulled for an extra attacker, but the heightened effort to guard against the Blackhawks’ attacks on an open net eats away at their own scoring attempts. The game wraps 4-2, a frustrating loss for the Canadiens as they let a couple of crucial points slip away, but kudos to Soderblom for playing an instrumental part in the Blackhawks’ victory.
