San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young has criticised Patrick Mahomes’ performance in the Super Bowl defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome, securing their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

A powerful defensive display overwhelmed Mahomes and his team, with the quarterback being sacked six times and throwing a costly pick-six. Despite completing 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions, Mahomes only began to fight back when the game was essentially over.

The Chiefs finally scored when they were already down 27-0, by which time Eagles fans had begun celebrating and starters were nearing the end of their game time. Young, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the 49ers, believes that Mahomes showed a lack of maturity during the crushing defeat.

He suggests that the three-time Super Bowl MVP too often looks for the big heroic play when behind in a significant game. The Hall of Fame told the ‘Dan Patrick Show’: “Patrick has dealt with this before. He’s the guy that has an answer. He’s mature to a point where he doesn’t have to look far downfield.

“It felt like he was looking for something amazing like the Superman stuff of his early days, when really just drop it off, get it out, blitz coverage. They also kept getting in 3rd-and-long jams. You can’t play ball that way.”

Young further compared Mahomes’ response to a previous Super Bowl experience: “I think that his response felt like the Bucs game from the Super Bowl a few years ago.

“We understand you’re under siege, we get it. But he doesn’t have to go down that way. You have an answer. You’re Patrick Mahomes, come up with an answer. When he did, that’s when he threw the pick-six.”

Mahomes has proven himself on the grandest stage previously. Since taking over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has led the team to seven straight AFC Championship Games and five Super Bowl appearances.
