In a candid new interview featured in the Swedish edition of NHL.com, Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson has opened up about his disappointing 2024-25 season and what he believes went wrong. The 26-year-old center, who signed a massive eight-year, $92 million contract before the start of the season, has faced criticism for underperforming amid high expectations.
“Maybe I had the wrong attitude going into the season,” Pettersson admitted. “I signed the big contract and felt like I had to do more, instead of just being myself. When the points didn’t come, I started overthinking everything.”
After putting up 102 points in the 2022-23 season and 89 points the following year, Pettersson managed just 45 points in 64 games last season—his lowest full-season total in his seven-year NHL career. He also dealt with a lingering knee injury that hindered his offseason training, followed by a season-ending stomach muscle injury in March.
Pettersson also addressed his well-publicized friction with former teammate J.T. Miller, who was traded to the New York Rangers in December. The Canucks struggled down the stretch and ultimately missed the playoffs.
“It was a tough season mentally and physically,” said Pettersson. “But I’m using the extra time this summer to refocus, train better, and get stronger.”
New head coach Adam Foote and team president Jim Rutherford echoed that sentiment. “If you want to be a top player, you have to prepare in an obsessive way,” Rutherford said. Foote added, “PD and I have had good talks. He knows what he needs to do, and I believe he’s committed.”
Despite last season’s struggles, there is optimism that Pettersson can bounce back. His honesty about the mental toll and injuries, combined with a renewed focus on preparation, may set the stage for a resurgence in 2025-26.
Canucks fans and management alike will be watching closely, hoping that Pettersson returns to form and reclaims his status as one of the NHL’s elite forwards.

But as the team looks toward the future, they still have the upcoming free agency of star Jack Eichel to deal with. While the Golden Knights would love to keep Eichel around, there could be a path that sees them let him leave.

In addition to Eichel entering free agency next summer, Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid is also scheduled to be a free agent. McDavid will be the main player on the free agent market, and every team will be vying for his services.
The Golden Knights could elect to go after McDavid instead of Eichel next offseason. This would put the biggest player in the NHL directly into one of the best cities in the United States.
NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report put together a list of teams that could go after McDavid next offseason. The Vegas Golden Knights were listed within the list, linking them to the Oilers star.
“Salary cap? What salary cap?! They’ll figure it out later…Eichel is great. He helped Vegas win a Stanley Cup. But when has loyalty ever been a thing for the Golden Knights? This is the most cutthroat, win-at-all-costs organization in the NHL. If there is even a small chance that McDavid could be available, they’ll likely be plotting a way to get involved,” Gretz wrote.
The biggest issue for Vegas in the pursuit of McDavid would be the money. But if the team didn’t bring Eichel back, they could have enough to make a run at McDavid.
Adding McDavid to this team could instantly push the Golden Knights to the top of the NHL in terms of contention. Vegas is already a very solid team, especially with the addition of Marner now, but McDavid is an entirely different tier of player.
