Shaquille O’Neal Claimed NBA Players Don’t Fear LeBron James Like Legendary Duo
NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal once left fans baffled with his claims that modern-day players don’t fear Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James in the same way that his generation did with two other legends. O’Neal was, in his own right, one of the most dominant players to ever step foot on the court, which helped him win four championships during his Hall of Fame career.
O’Neal has been known to make some rather outlandish claims in his post-playing career, such as his assertion that Minnesota Timberwolves man Rudy Gobert is the worst player in the organisation’s history. However, his claims on James, a four-time champion in his own right, were a step too far for some fans.
O’Neal Claimed James Doesn’t Strike Same Fear As Jordan or Bryant
The former center held nothing back in his assessment

Speaking on ‘The Big Podcast’ in 2024, a show that ‘Shaq’ himself was a co-host of, the TNT analyst explained how he believed that James was unable to strike the same fear into players as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant did during their careers.
“I’ve heard players say, including myself, ‘I feared Mike [Jordan].’ I’ve heard players in [Mario Chalmers’] generation say they feared Kobe. I’ve never really heard any player say they feared LeBron. I’ve never heard anybody say it.”
O’Neal’s claims led to several online sharing their takes on the matter, with one fan saying “Just ask any player in the Eastern Conference conference in the 2010’s that same question,” while a second added: “Lebron certainly was feared in the East during his prime, stop it.” A third even accused the iconic center of ‘generational hating’ with his outrageous take.
Despite O’Neal’s comments though, it appears that other players who have faced off against LeBron have taken the opposite view. In fact, former Washington Wizards man Gilbert Arenas even anointed James as the most feared man in NBA history.
