Daniel Carter had heard the stories long before he stepped onto the property—the whispers at night, the unexplained footsteps, the way the air inside the house felt heavier after sunset. As the founder of a small paranormal investigation team, Daniel was used to skepticism, but something about Glenmoor unsettled him in a way he couldn’t explain. Maybe it was the way the porch light flickered when no wind stirred the trees, or the way the front door groaned as if protesting their arrival. With him that night were Kate Monroe, a sharp-witted historian with an unshakable calm, and Ryan Holt, the technician whose humor often masked his unease. They told themselves it was just another investigation. They were wrong.

Chapter 2 – Echoes of the Past

Inside, the house smelled faintly of dust and old wood, layered with something colder—an absence of warmth that settled into the bones. Kate wasted no time explaining the house’s history. Originally built by a Scottish immigrant family, Glenmoor had once been a bustling homestead, filled with children, livestock, and laughter. Over the decades, it became a refuge, then a boarding house, and later a place for children sent away during wartime. Records hinted at tragedies but offered no details, as if someone had deliberately erased parts of the past. Daniel listened carefully, his eyes scanning the walls, the staircase, the narrow hallway leading to the nursery. It was there that the atmosphere shifted. Ryan noticed it first, the sudden dip in temperature, the way his equipment spiked without reason. Somewhere above them, a floorboard creaked—slow, deliberate. “That’s not the house settling,” Ryan muttered. And deep down, they all knew it wasn’t.

As the night deepened, they moved toward the nursery. Dust-covered toys lined the shelves, their glassy eyes reflecting the dim light. Kate hesitated at the doorway, overwhelmed by a sudden wave of sadness that didn’t feel like her own. Ryan’s equipment began reacting wildly—motion sensors triggered near the floor, as if something small was moving just out of sight. Daniel knelt, speaking softly, addressing the presence as if it were a frightened child. In response, the temperature dropped sharply, and a soft sound echoed across the room, like fingers brushing against wood. “I didn’t mean to,” the recorder whispered. Kate felt tears sting her eyes, though she couldn’t explain why. The emotions flooding the room were raw, tangled with fear and regret. Whatever lingered here wasn’t angry. It was lost.

The cellar was the last place Daniel wanted to go, yet every instinct told him the truth lay beneath the house. The stairs groaned under their weight, the darkness swallowing their light with alarming ease. The air was thick, almost suffocating. Halfway through the session, Daniel felt disoriented, his thoughts blurring as a sensation washed over him—fabric brushing against his legs, the weight of unfamiliar clothing, panic rising without a clear source. Kate noticed immediately, pulling him out of the trance-like state before it went too far. Later, reviewing the audio, they would hear a young voice crying softly, repeating the same phrase over and over: “I was scared.” The implication was horrifying. Not a haunting born of malice, but of a moment frozen in terror, replaying itself endlessly beneath the floorboards.

Chapter 6 – Leaving, But Never Alone

Just before dawn, as exhaustion set in, the house grew quiet. Too quiet. Daniel thanked the unseen presence for communicating, assuring it that it wasn’t alone anymore. As if in response, a soft scraping sound echoed across the wooden table, slow and deliberate, sending chills through all three of them. They hadn’t touched a thing. When they finally stepped outside, the morning light felt unreal, like waking from a dream that refused to fade. Glenmoor House stood behind them, silent and unchanged, yet Daniel knew something had shifted. They had come searching for evidence. What they found instead was a story unfinished, a voice still waiting to be heard. And long after they left Blackwood, Daniel would sometimes wake in the middle of the night with a single word echoing in his mind—soft, apologetic, and unbearably human.
