Back in February, Patrick Mahomes’s father, Mahomes Sr., was arrested for a third time over DWI charges. The former MLB star was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.23 during a traffic stop at Gentry Parkway in Texas In August he pleaded guilty to the charges at the Smith County, Texas, and was indicted in April. Now, on Monday, it was announced that he has received a jail sentence.

Mahomes Sr.’s arrest on February 3, came days before his son led the Chiefs to a third Super Bowl title in Las Vegas. According to The Austin American-Statesman, the court documents mentioned that the officer noticed a 16-ounce beer can in the front seat, and Mahomes Sr. admitted to having “a few beers” at a bar before the sobriety test was carried out. Moreover, the report mentioned that his car’s registration had also expired in September 2022.

In the announcement on September 23, 2024, the senior Mahomes was sentenced to five years probation for a DWI third time or more charge, in addition to intense supervision in the first year. If Mahomes Sr. were to fail his probation, he could face 10 years in prison. Smith County Court also suspended his driving license for 1 year and told him to install a breathalyzer ignition device in his vehicle. He must also serve 10 mandatory days in jail according to Texas law.

The charge against Mahomes is a third-degree felony. Other sentence requirements include 160 community service hours, a substance abuse evaluation through the probation department, a life skills course, enrollment in the DWI repeat offender program, and Alcohol Anonymous classes. He also had a pre-trial hearing in October for driving with an invalid license, but that charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

This isn’t also the first time that he has been arrested over intoxicated driving. He was arrested in 2018 and was sentenced to 40 days in jail that be served on weekends according to Smith County court records. His other DWI arrest came in September 2008 in South Dakota. Meanwhile, as his sentence was read out, his lawyer Joseph D. Murphy, inquired about the possibility of Mahomes Sr. traveling to watch his son, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes play.

For this, Judge Kerry Russell of the 7th District Court said he would need to speak to Smith County probation to see what can be done. Pat Mahomes Sr. was a baseball player himself, playing in MLB for a decade. He even trained his son in baseball. However, when Patrick Mahomes grew up, he decided to pursue a football career. Initially, the father wasn’t happy, but he later accepted and was often seen in the stadiums to cheer for his son.

When his father was arrested in February, the Super Bowl-winning MVP addressed the situation in the press conference before the big game. “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is. It’s a family matter. I’ll just keep it to the family, and that’s all I really have to say at this point,” he said.

With the Chiefs set to play the Chargers on September 29, it is possible that the QB will have to answer questions regarding the recent development. Before, his guilty plea and subsequent sentence, Mahomes Sr. announced he was on the path to be clean.
