The Bruins are not going to send Brad Marchand to an Eastern Conference team, but a deal for Boston’s captain is allegedly still on the table. According to Boston Hockey Now’s Andrew Fantucchio, the Golden Knights and Avalanche are two potential Western Conference destinations for the 36-year-old Bruins captain ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
“…it will take a sizeable return in order to convince the Bruins to trade away their captain. The Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche are believed to be among the teams interested,” Fantucchio wrote.
The Athletic’s Chris Johnston claimed on Thursday’s “Insider Trading” podcast that “it does feel like it’s moving toward a Marchand deal.”
“At this point in time, there’s no confirmation that [Brad Marchand] is going to be traded, but the feeling is league-wide that he is likely to be moved by the Bruins at some point to the West,” Johnston said. “We’ll see where this goes. There have been some conversations on a new contract as recently as the last couple of days. There’s always the pivot point when we get this close. You don’t want to box yourself totally in, but it does feel like it’s moving toward a Marchand deal.”
Marchand doesn’t want to be traded. From the sound of it, his teammate, defenseman Brandon Carlo, doesn’t want him to be dealt either.
“It’s strange, I mean a guy who since the moment I got here (in 2016) has had a big role with this group, with this team and this organization,” Carlo said, per NHL.com. “We have so much respect for him and the way he does carry himself. Even though he is injured, he’s still going to being a component of that.
“Coming into the rink today, just having his personally around the room is very helpful.”
The ball’s in Boston GM Don Sweeney’s court as Friday’s 3 PM ET deadline approaches.
