South Carolina just made history by locking in head coach Dawn Staley with a record-breaking contract — and one of the most respected voices in women’s basketball is here for it.
Hall of Fame Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, who owns three national titles, reacted to the deal with clear admiration — and a blunt reality check.
“You go, girl. That’s awesome.”
That’s how VanDerveer ended her answer when asked about Staley’s $25.25 million deal during a recent interview. But her message wasn’t just congratulatory — it was a callout.
VanDerveer explained that while the contract is a major milestone, it’s still far from closing the gender pay gap in college sports.
“Some people might be upset. ‘Wow, that’s a lot of money,’” VanDerveer said. “But she’s not even in the top 10 for all the men.”

She praised South Carolina for showing its respect by making the investment, calling it an exciting sign of progress for the game. But VanDerveer’s tone made it clear that women’s sports still have room to grow when it comes to equity.
VanDerveer admits there’s more room for growth
“Women’s basketball has great coaches,” she added. “It’s such an exciting time to be part of it.”
Staley’s new contract includes a $4 million base salary, a $250,000 increase each season, and a $500,000 signing bonus — totaling $25.25 million through the 2029–30 season.
And while that makes her the highest-paid women’s college basketball coach ever, it still doesn’t land her near the top of men’s college coaching salaries.
If anything, VanDerveer’s reaction reinforces just how overdue this deal was — and how far women’s sports still have to go.
