Edmonton, AB – July 7, 2025 — In a heartfelt gesture that celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest players in hockey history, the Edmonton Oilers have officially approved a $3.8 million tribute: a statue of Wayne Gretzky to be erected outside Rogers Place.
Often referred to simply as “The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky not only transformed the Edmonton Oilers into a dynasty during the 1980s, but also redefined what greatness in hockey could mean. The statue will stand as a permanent reminder of his impact—not just on the franchise, but on the entire sport.
A Monument Worthy of a Legend
The project was unanimously approved by Oilers ownership and supported by the City of Edmonton. The 12-foot-tall bronze statue, designed by a renowned Canadian sculptor, will feature Gretzky in a signature pose hoisting the Stanley Cup—capturing the glory of the Oilers’ dominant championship runs.
“Wayne Gretzky brought pride, championships, and a global spotlight to Edmonton,” said Oilers chairman Daryl Katz. “This statue is a small token of our everlasting gratitude for what he did for this city and for the game.”
Fans Celebrate the Announcement
The announcement was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from fans across Alberta and beyond. Many took to social media to express their excitement:
“This is long overdue. No one deserves this more than Gretzky,” one fan wrote.
“He is the reason I became a hockey fan,” another added.
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with the statue expected to be unveiled in summer 2026 during a major commemorative event that will likely include former teammates, league officials, and Gretzky himself.
A Legacy That Endures
Wayne Gretzky played for the Edmonton Oilers from 1979 to 1988, leading the team to four Stanley Cup championships and racking up an unmatched number of records—many of which still stand today. Known for his vision, grace, and leadership on the ice, he became a symbol of excellence not only in Canada but around the world.
Beyond his stats, Gretzky is remembered for elevating the game of hockey and inspiring generations of players.
“There will never be another like him,” said Oilers GM Ken Holland. “Every kid who walks past that statue will be reminded that greatness is possible—and that it once wore #99 in Edmonton.”
More Than a Statue
The $3.8 million project will also include a commemorative plaza with interactive digital displays highlighting key moments from Gretzky’s career, as well as a donor wall recognizing fans and partners who contributed to the initiative.
For the city of Edmonton, this isn’t just about bronze and concrete. It’s about legacy, pride, and a deep sense of gratitude for a man who gave everything—and put a Canadian city on the hockey map forever.
