New Jersey State Police have released bodycam footage showing the arrest of Sean Higgins after the fatal accident that claimed the lives of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew on August 29.
The Columbus Blue Jackets player and his brother had gone out for a bike ride in South Jersey the night before they were supposed to attend their sister’s wedding but would never return as they were hit by the aforementioned Higgins, who was accused of being drunk when he struck and killed the unfortunate siblings.
Body-worn footage from an officer recorded in the immediate aftermath was released this weekend and shows the former U.S. Army Major being taken into custody.
The 43-year-old, who hails from Woodston, New Jersey, was ordered to remain in the Salem Country Correctional Facility before his trial.
The video below shows Higgins admitting to drinking a few beers.
“I mean I’ve been drinking beers but I haven’t had one in like two hours. So since the accident, like probably an hour or so,” he said.
He also told police he had undergone knee surgery before beginning a field sobriety test.

Prosecutors revealed that lab reports showed Higgins had a blood alcohol level of .087 on the night, which is above the state’s .08 legal limit.
He has been charged with two counts of death by auto, as well as reckless driving, possession of an open container, and consuming alcohol in a vehicle.
The Jersey native faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. He has been deemed a flight risk by a judge and is being kept in custody until his trial.
