Jamie Lee Curtis Responds to Backlash Over Her Controversial Charlie Kirk Comments

Jamie Lee Curtis is speaking out about the backlash she received following her comments regarding the late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. In a recent interview with Variety, the 66-year-old actress clarified her statements made during her appearance on the WTF podcast, where she emotionally reflected on Kirk’s assassination last month.

Curtis expressed frustration over how her remarks were misinterpreted. “An excerpt of it mistranslated what I was saying as I wished him well — like I was talking about him in a very positive way, which I wasn’t,” she explained. “I was simply talking about his faith in God. And so it was a mistranslation, which is a pun, but not.”

In her interview, Curtis discussed what she perceives as a “binary world” where many people struggle to hold two conflicting ideas simultaneously. She lamented that individuals today are often “vilified for having a mind” that embraces contradictory thoughts.

Despite being a public figure, Curtis emphasized that she does not feel the need to censor herself. “If I was careful, I wouldn’t have told you any of what I just told you,” she stated. “I can’t not be who I am in the moment I am.”

Curtis’s comments about Charlie Kirk initially sparked outrage when she mentioned his death during the podcast episode aired on September 15. She mistakenly referred to him as “Charlie Crist,” which she attributed to his strong religious beliefs. “I’m going to bring something up with you just because it’s front of mind. Charlie Crist was killed two days ago,” she said, before correcting herself. “Sorry, Kirk. I just call him Crist, I think, because of Christ, because of his deep belief.”

The backlash intensified as many criticized Kirk for his inflammatory remarks about women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community, labeling them as racist and transphobic. Critics argued that he should not be regarded positively solely based on his Christian identity.

In her defense, Curtis clarified that she disagreed with Kirk on “almost every point I ever heard him say” but acknowledged his strong religious beliefs. “I believe he was a man of faith, and I hope in that moment when he died that he felt connected to his faith,” she said, becoming emotional. “Even though I find what his ideas were abhorrent to me, I still believe he’s a father and a husband and a man of faith, and I hope whatever ‘connection to God’ means, that he felt it.”
