Uber Driver Waits Two Hours With Children After Mother Disappears in Broward County

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — What began as a routine Uber ride in Tamarac turned into a two-hour ordeal involving two young children, a missing mother, and a coordinated police search across a commercial district late Wednesday evening.

According to authorities, an Uber driver contacted law enforcement after a woman he had transported with her two children exited his vehicle in a warehouse parking lot and did not return. The driver, who primarily speaks Spanish, remained on scene with the children while repeatedly attempting to reach the woman by phone.

Deputies responded shortly after receiving the call and began canvassing the area near West Commercial Boulevard and Northwest 108th Avenue.

A Ride That Took an Unexpected Turn

The driver told deputies he picked up the woman and her children in Tamarac earlier in the evening. During the trip, he said, the woman repeatedly instructed him to deviate from the GPS route.

“She kept saying, ‘No, no, no — go this way,’” the driver explained to officers. “She said cancel the ride and give me cash.”

According to deputies, the woman allegedly offered the driver an additional $10 and asked him to cancel the trip within the Uber app. Eventually, the vehicle arrived at a commercial warehouse area.

The driver reported that the woman exited the vehicle, telling him she would be right back. She then walked behind a row of parked trucks and disappeared from sight.

“She said she was coming back,” the driver told deputies. “I wait. I call. Nothing.”

The driver showed officers his phone, which indicated he had made at least a dozen calls to the woman over the course of more than two hours. Initially, she answered and said she was returning. Eventually, she stopped responding altogether.

The driver also told deputies he believed the woman appeared intoxicated during the ride. Officers on scene noted that they could smell what they described as “remnants of rum” inside the vehicle and that the woman had been drinking from a cup during transport.

Concerned for the children’s safety and unsure what to do, the driver contacted law enforcement.

“He doesn’t know her,” one deputy explained over police radio. “He’s just the Uber driver. She walked off and left the kids.”

Deputies question her about why she exited the Uber vehicle and why the ride deviated significantly from the stated destination. According to law enforcement, her listed home address was in the opposite direction from where the driver ultimately stopped.

“I’m having a hard time understanding why you got out of the Uber in the first place,” a deputy tells her.

The woman struggles to provide a clear explanation, stating that her situation was “complicated” and acknowledging that she did not have a vehicle of her own. She admitted her children remained in the Uber after she exited.

“It sucks,” she says on camera. “I should have a car. I’m just a mom.”

Legal Questions and Investigation

During questioning, deputies advised the woman of her Miranda rights, clarifying that she was not free to leave but was not yet under arrest.

“The law requires that you be advised of these rights prior to answering any questions,” an officer states in the footage.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether formal charges were filed as of Thursday morning. However, legal experts note that leaving children unattended with a stranger for an extended period can potentially constitute child neglect under Florida law.

Deputies described the Uber driver as cooperative throughout the incident. He remained with the children, repeatedly attempting to contact their mother and waiting for law enforcement to arrive rather than leaving them alone.
