Jason Kelce reveals the Kansas City Chiefs‘ defensive struggles in recent weeks leave him concerned for the rest of their 2024/25 NFL season as the defending champions bid for an unprecedented third Super Bowl win on the spin.

Patrick Mahomes‘ side have dropped 57 points in the last two games and have allowed 20+ on four occasions throughout the campaign as they battle through injuries and availability issues on both the offense and defense.

And whilst the likes of Mahomes, Travis Kelce, DeAndre Hopkins and Noah Gray have managed to get enough points on the board to survive all but one of the contests, they have found themselves dropping points finally.

This is something that concerns the ex-Philadelphia Eagles star after the defense proved to be so resilient for coach Andy Reid‘s side throughout the last two campaigns, when they won the Super Bowl twice.

“But listen, it’s a little bit concerning,” Jason said of the defense’s struggles on The Rich Eisen Show. “The biggest thing that’s been concerning over the last two weeks is their defense has faltered for probably the first time in almost two years.

“Spags [Steve Spagnulo/defense coordinator]… He was the untold story, in some ways, of last year’s success. Pat Mahomes and Andy always get the credit, but that defense was really what allowed them to persevere through a lot of that stuff.

“And the last couple of weeks they’ve faltered a bit. They’re dealing with some injuries at the back end and there’s all this noise that Spags maybe wanted to add somebody as a secondary during the trade deadline so we’ll see.”

Kelce reveals Chiefs’ strengths

But it’s not all going wrong for the Chiefs, despite issues for Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco on the offense as they all have landed on the injured reserve list throughout the campaign.

The 36-year-old former NFL center points out that they have a clutch gene and mentality to always grind out a result, and that keeps their gravy train rolling even if they don’t appear to be particularly impressive or flashy.

“I mean again, they still find ways to win if the game’s ever close,” Jason added. “If this was poker I’m all in on Patrick Mahomes and the vast majority of those games are close, especially playoff games. Nerves are just a reflection of unknown. Your nervous because you don’t know what to expect.

“These guys have been through so many of these situations, there’s multiple times and they’ve executed them at a high level. There’s a reason why Buffalo [Bills] went for it last week on a fourth down. They knew, ‘We cannot give the ball back to Pat Mahomes. Can’t do it.’

“So as long as Pat is there, they’re going to be in every single game, they’re always going to be a contender as long as Andy Reid is there, they’re going to be a great team.”
