Part 2: The Storm of Emotions
.
.
Summer passed, and the summer storms frequently swept across the arid land where Corbin lived. Strong winds blew through the valleys, carrying dark clouds and the rumble of thunder. But within Corbin, another storm was brewing—a storm of emotions and anxiety.
Nijoni had returned, but not as often as before. Each time she appeared, she brought Corbin comfort and joy, but also an unshakeable worry. He wondered if she was safe, if her tribe could survive in an increasingly hostile world. Every time he heard the sound of horses, his heart raced, but often it was just wild horses running through the valley..

One afternoon, as the golden sunlight bathed the valley, Corbin decided he would do something to show his gratitude to Nijoni and her tribe. He began gathering food, water, and necessary supplies that he could take to them. He knew these small gifts might not change the situation, but at least they would show that he stood by their side.
As night fell, Corbin prepared for his journey. He packed food into a leather bag and took some water with him. His heart was filled with hope but also with anxiety. He didn’t know if Nijoni would be nearby or if her tribe would accept help from a white man like him.
When Corbin arrived at the spot where he first met Nijoni, he felt sweat running down his back. He called her name, but only echoes returned from the rock walls. The night was dark, and he wasn’t sure whether to stay or turn back. But then, from the shadows, he heard the sound of horses and the voices of Apache people.
Nijoni appeared, her eyes lighting up at the sight of Corbin. “Why are you here?” she asked, her voice filled with surprise and joy.
“I wanted to help,” Corbin said, offering her the leather bag filled with food and water. “I know these times are hard for you and your tribe.”
Nijoni stared at the bag, then turned back to Corbin. “You don’t have to do this,” she said, but in her eyes, Corbin saw gratitude.
“I know,” he replied. “But I want to. I chose to stand by you.”
She nodded, and a small smile appeared on her lips. “We do not forget what you did for me. You saved me. Now, you are helping us too.”
In the following days, Corbin and Nijoni met more frequently. They talked about life, about the challenges both sides faced. Corbin shared the difficulties of living in solitude, while Nijoni spoke of the traditions and culture of the Apache people. The bond between them grew deeper, and Corbin felt he had found a kindred spirit.
However, not long after that, a new threat emerged. Another group of soldiers from the east began advancing into Apache territory, and news of their presence quickly spread. Corbin felt anxious knowing that Nijoni and her tribe could be in danger. He decided he would not just stand by and wait; he had to act.
One evening, Corbin went to meet Nijoni and others in her tribe. He spoke about what he had heard and emphasized that they needed to prepare for a confrontation. “I cannot let you suffer alone,” he said. “I will stand by you, no matter what happens.”
Nijoni looked at him with gratitude but also worry. “We cannot let you get hurt,” she said. “This is our fight.”
“But I have chosen to stand with you,” Corbin insisted. “I cannot just watch when you are threatened.”
The meeting lasted until midnight, and they finally decided they would find a way to confront the soldiers. Corbin joined the Apache warriors in planning an ambush. They didn’t have much time, but they had to act immediately.
