Patrick Mahomes‘ performance this season has been a topic of discussion, as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback hasn’t quite met the high standards fans have come to expect. His current interception rate stands at 3.8 percent, marking the highest of his career, while his passer rating has dropped to 88.9 – the lowest since he debuted in 2017. Adding to the concerns, Pro Football Focus has graded his passing at 70.7, also a career low.

Despite the less-than-stellar numbers, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remains skeptical of the notion that Mahomes is in a slump.

Ahead of their upcoming game against the Chiefs, Shanahan emphasized that he still sees Mahomes as a major threat and isn’t underestimating the star quarterback.

“I think everyone says ‘down year’ just because their numbers aren’t just crazy, but Pat is as good as it gets,” Shanahan said.

“He’s been as good as it gets since the first year that he got to play. All their games, I think, except for one, have come down to the last possession, and he’s as good as anyone in that last possession.

Though Mahomes has faced struggles this season, there are still positives. His completion rate has reached 69.4 percent, a career-best, even if his six touchdown passes have been offset by six interceptions.

Mahomes is Mahomes

The Chiefs‘ offensive inconsistencies aren’t limited to Mahomes’ passing. Their running game ranks 19th in the league, and their ability to convert in the red zone is a significant concern, with a scoring percentage that ranks 29th. For comparison, the 49ers haven’t fared much better, tied for 25th place in red zone efficiency alongside the Giants and Eagles.

As the Chiefs prepare to visit Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, Shanahan has made it clear that he doesn’t buy into the idea that Mahomes’ performance is on a downturn.

“Their running numbers aren’t quite what they were last year,” Shanahan continued. “Their red zone isn’t real high. So I think that equates to numbers, but Pat is Pat, and he’s as good as it gets, and I don’t see that changing at all.”
