New Footage Of Vanessa Bryant Kicking Out NBA Players From Kobe’s Funerals Goes Viral
I never really addressed why you weren’t at Kobe Bryant’s memorial service. His funeral was one of the most emotional moments in NBA history. But off-camera, the guest list told a very different story. Despite being one of the biggest names in the league, LeBron James was rumored to have been disinvited because Vanessa Bryant allegedly believed he’d turned Kobe’s final night into a spotlight for himself. There were also accusations from Stephen A. Smith that this wasn’t a one-off; he compared it to LeBron not attending Dwyane Wade’s Hall of Fame induction—though that was also under very painful circumstances for James’s family.
Then there was Shaquille O’Neal, nearly left off the guest list due to their long-running feud, even though they’d reconciled publicly. Derek Fisher, a five-time champion and long-time teammate, showed up only to be turned away at the door—he reportedly had no confirmed invitation, and people close to the Bryant family described his absence as stemming from unresolved issues and perceived betrayal. Dwight Howard, another former Lakers player with a strained public relationship with Kobe, was allegedly told he’d be escorted out if he showed up. Carmelo Anthony, with whom Kobe had a close bond through Team USA, claimed he was not invited, saying he waited for the call but never got it. Nick Young (Swaggy P) was said to be blacklisted over a scandal that Kobe viewed as a breach of the locker room’s code. Pau Gasol, one of Kobe’s most trusted teammates, was initially omitted from the printed guest list—until Kobe’s daughter intervened, insisting, “My dad would never do this to you,” and he was allowed in. Other names—Lamar Odom, Carl Malone, Gary Payton, and others—were speculated to be excluded or sidelined due to past controversies or being viewed as a distraction by those organizing the memorial.
All of this sparked intense debate: how many of these decisions were Kobe’s own wishes, and how many were decisions made by Vanessa Bryant or the inner circle after his death? Was it pride, hurt, or a desire to protect the sanctity of the moment? We may never have clarity on all of it, but these exclusions changed how many fans saw those relationships, and how they saw honor, loyalty, and respect in the wake of loss.
