‘It’s when my son Trey was born. I cannot tell you what it was like bringing that child home on that first night and realizing that he was my responsibility.
‘Parenting was one of the first things, the first real things in my life that really shook me to my core.’
Will explained that his complicated relationship with his own father, Willard Carroll Smith Sr., resulted in him putting a lot of pressure on himself to be a good dad.
‘I remember that first night. I can’t even talk about it,’ he continued as he began to cry.
‘I had talked so crazy about my father and all the stuff my father didn’t do. And then I was like, “Oh no, it is my turn now.”‘
The movie star recalled making a ‘promise’ to Trey to do ‘everything he could to be a good dad.’
‘I just fell down on my knees and I made one of the most hardcore promises ever made to a human being – that I was going to do everything I could do to be a good daddy to you,’ he said, addressing Trey, who was in the audience.
Will added, ‘He’s cool now, thank God – he’s going to be 32 this year.’

In his memoir, Will, the Fresh Prince of Bell Air star – who went on to welcome son Jaden, 26, and daughter Willow, 23, with second wife Jada Pinkett Smith – previously opened up about his ‘violent’ and ‘alcoholic’ father.
‘My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play, and recital,’ he wrote. ‘He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of every one of my movies.
‘He listened to every record. He visited every studio. The same intense perfectionism that terrorized his family put food on the table every night of my life.’
He also revealed that he watched his dad ‘punch his mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed’ when he was only nine years old.
‘I saw her spit blood. That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am,’ he added.
‘Within everything that I have done since then – the awards and accolades, the spotlights and attention, the characters and the laughs – there has been a subtle string of apologies to my mother for my inaction that day.
‘For failing her in the moment. For failing to stand up to my father. For being a coward.’

He admitted that he once contemplated pushing his drunken father down the stairs as retribution for the ‘decades of pain, anger, and resentment’ he had caused.
‘As a child I’d always told myself that I would one day avenge my mother,’ he explained.
‘That when I was big enough, when I was strong enough, when I was no longer a coward, I would slay him.
‘I paused at the top of the stairs [one evening].
‘I could shove him down, and easily get away with it.
‘As the decades of pain, anger, and resentment coursed then receded, I shook my head and proceeded to wheel Daddio to the bathroom.’
Will Sr. died of cancer at age 76 in 2016.
