In her interview with David Letterman, Clark opened up about how her competitive nature isn’t always a good thing. She admitted, “When I’m just playing,like a causal card game with my family and friends and then like everybody hates me! and I’m like ‘Oh great’.” Letterman then asked if winning was a must for her. Clark laughed and replied, “I know I can’t win everytime.”

It’s a rare confession from someone who’s spent her life proving otherwise, and by 2025, as she navigates the spotlight of being a WNBA star, it might reflect the pressure she’s carried since Iowa.

“When we trick-or-treated in Des Moines growing up, I would be like, so sweaty under my costume because I was in a dead sprint from house to house,” the Indiana Fever guard, recalled “I had to have the most candy. That’s how I operated.” But that’s not all! Clark said her dad could never keep up as she dashed from house to house, hunting for candy on Halloween. And it got worse when she got home! Her mom would always be p-ssed!

“My mom would get p-ssed at my dad because it’s like, ‘Why did you lose our daughter? Why is she running through the neighborhood by herself?’ ” remembered Clark. “But it was just because I was trying to beat everybody.”

Clark has given plenty of proof that her competitive drive isn’t always a good thing. Whether it’s card games with family or sprinting for candy on Halloween, she always has to win. But that mindset comes with its downsides! The ‘everybody hates me’ line isn’t just a joke—it’s a glimpse into the isolation that can come with always chasing the top spot. Still, fans only care about one thing–seeing the Indiana superstar dominate. With the 2025 WNBA season still months away, her near-miss in the 2024 playoffs fuels her redemption shot.
