Coming out of their Christmas break, the Montreal Canadiens had no room for a leisurely return to the ice, facing a tough back-to-back against two of the Atlantic Division’s strongest teams in Florida. Shockingly, they turned in a standout performance, shutting out the Florida Panthers 4-0 in the first game of the back-to-back series. Let’s dive into what made this game noteworthy, starting with the remarkable shutout by Jakub Dobes.

Dobes’ shutout was a defensive masterclass, but the spotlight also shone brightly on Kirby Dach, who seemed to find his stride in this matchup. As improbable as a two-goal game seemed for Dach just a week ago, he turned heads with his stellar play against Florida. It was almost like Santa had returned his game to him just in time for the holidays.

Positioning and anticipation, which had been soft spots for Dach since the start of this season, took center stage once again as he capitalized on two prime scoring opportunities. His finishing touch, particularly evident in his second goal, was sharp and precise, making him one of the most pivotal players on ice right alongside Dobes.

Dach’s line dominated high-danger scoring chances while they were on the ice, controlling about two-thirds of them. This game, Dach notably kept turnovers to a minimum, and his decision-making with the puck was on point. If Dach continues on this path, his resurgence could spell excellent news for teammates Alex Newhook and Patrik Laine, influencing their five-on-five results positively.

One game doesn’t make a season, and while it’s too soon to declare Dach fully back to form, this was a promising reboot post-holidays. If he can sustain this level of play, we might be witnessing the beginning of a mid-season turnaround for him. Consistency will be key, and the journey continues today as the Canadiens take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second half of their Florida stint.
