Oilers Stun Sharks in OT, Steal Win from Stellar Askarov

The Edmonton Oilers pulled off a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory against the San Jose Sharks, capping off an intense battle that saw a relentless Oilers club keep pushing until they were finally able to solve an incredible Yaroslav Aksarov. With a last-minute equalizer and an OT winner just a few seconds later, the Sharks will be disappointed they couldn’t pull off the upset win.
Trailing 2-1 with just 17 seconds left in regulation, defenseman Mattias Ekholm delivered the clutch goal to force overtime, sending Rogers Place into a frenzy. The Oilers started out slowly in a matinee game. They went down 2-1 and then pushed the pace, peppering Askarov, who was playing just his sixth NHL game. The Oilers missed several opportunities, but Askarov was unbelievable, nearly stealing the game for the Sharks.
The Oilers fired a season-high 23 shots in the second period but were repeatedly denied by Askarov, who finished with 41 saves in a standout performance.
The game-winning moment came just 18 seconds into overtime. After the Sharks won the faceoff, Connor McDavid stripped the puck and raced past 2024 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini before feeding Leon Draisaitl for the one-timer winner. Draisaitl, who missed several golden chances earlier, redeemed himself in style to secure Edmonton’s 10th win in 12 games.
The Oilers Pushed, Never Giving Up Despite the Frustration of Missing Chances
Connor McDavid was buzzing and recorded three assists, extending his point streak to eight games (3-14-17). Draisaitl now has 19 points (7-12-19) in his last eight outings. Zach Hyman also added another goal, bringing his total to nine in eight games since returning from injury.
The win highlights both San Jose’s potential as a young team on the rise and Edmonton’s resilience, showcasing a team firing on all cylinders as they head into the holiday break on a red-hot 10-2-0 run.
