Lil Wayne at the Super Bowl? Roc Nation CEO Says It Was on the Table

If you’re a Lil Wayne fan, this one might sting just a little bit. According to Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, the legendary New Orleans rapper was actually in the mix when it came to deciding the Super Bowl halftime performer for 2025. But as fate (or industry politics) would have it, the gig ultimately went to Kendrick Lamar.

In a recent interview with Nola.com, Perez confirmed that Wayne’s name came up in discussions, saying, “I didn’t choose the artist, but I do believe that definitely there was consideration” for the Louisiana-born hip-hop icon. However, in the end, the decision was made “that Kendrick is the right person for the show at this moment.”

Now, if you’re like most hip-hop heads, you’re probably sitting there with a mix of excitement and frustration. Kendrick Lamar? Undoubtedly one of the greatest artists of our time. His artistry, lyricism, and ability to blend social commentary with music make him an incredible pick. But Wayne? The Carter III legend? The self-proclaimed “best rapper alive”? For the Super Bowl? In his own backyard? The thought alone makes you wonder what could have been.

The Case for Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne performing at the Super Bowl in New Orleans would have been an electrifying, full-circle moment. Born and raised in the city, he helped shape the sound of modern rap with his unmistakable flow, clever wordplay, and relentless work ethic. Wayne has delivered more hits than some artists have verses, and just imagining him tearing through A Milli, Lollipop, Go DJ, or 6 Foot 7 Foot on the biggest stage in sports would have been a spectacle for the ages.

And let’s not forget—this is the same man who’s had a hand in launching the careers of some of the biggest names in music today (hello, Drake and Nicki Minaj). Love him or hate him, his impact on the culture is undeniable.

Why Kendrick?

But before we spiral too deep into alternate reality, let’s acknowledge the choice that was made. Kendrick Lamar is, without a doubt, a generational talent. His Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricism, his ability to craft a message that resonates, and his explosive stage presence make him a top-tier choice for the Super Bowl.

Plus, there’s history here. Kendrick already delivered a legendary performance at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige. This time, he’ll be taking center stage on his own—something fans have been waiting for.

What’s Next for Wayne?

So, where does that leave Lil Wayne? For now, he remains a titan in the industry, still dropping music, still influencing the game, and still very much a force to be reckoned with. Maybe another Super Bowl will give him the shine he deserves. Maybe a special guest appearance is in the works. Or maybe, just maybe, he’ll use this as fuel for another chart-topping classic.

One thing’s for sure—this conversation isn’t over. And if we know anything about Weezy F. Baby, it’s that he never stops working. Maybe next time, the call will go a little differently.

What do you think? Did the NFL fumble the bag by passing on Lil Wayne, or is Kendrick the right choice? Let’s hear it.
