It’s time to polish off your tiaras and book your tickets to Genovia because Princess Diaries 3 is officially (!!!) happening. On November 15, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the threequel is in the works at Disney, and Aadrita Mukerji (known for her work on Reacher and Supergirl) is slated to write the script.

Based on Meg Cabot’s book series, The Princess Diaries debuted in theaters in 2001. The sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, premiered in 2004. Starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, the iconic films follow introverted San Francisco teen Mia Thermopolis as she discovers that she’s a princess and the heir apparent to a small European principality called Genovia. Her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Rinaldi, unexpectedly arrives at Mia and her mother’s firehouse-turned-art-studio-turned-apartment to impart the rules of royalty, so Mia is properly poised to inherit the throne one day.

At the end of The Princess Diaries 2, Clarisse steps down as monarch, and Mia is crowned “Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia” (ok, chills!). She successfully abolishes the antiquated royal marriage law (that she must marry to rule Genovia) and instead keeps her heart open to love — and a relationship with Lord Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine).

So, what does this mean for Princess Diaries 3? Below, we break down everything we know so far, including the release date, casting, and deets on trailers.

Are Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews coming back for Princess Diaries 3?

Neither Anne Hathaway nor Julie Andrews are confirmed to return to Princess Diaries 3. But! Anne has previously shown major interest in reprising her role for a third installment.

In January 2023, Anne told People that it’s “thrilling” to “see the level of excitement” for the third movie. A few months earlier, in October 2022, the Oscar Award-winning actress shard with Entertainment Tonight that she’s even “pulling for” the film.

“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,” she added. “We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

On Watch What Happens Live! in 2019, Anne revealed that there was a script for the third movie. “I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” she said. “It’s just, we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

Unfortunately, Julie Andrews now doesn’t seem quite as confident in her return. In a December 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, she said, “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible.”

“It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run,” Andrews added.

She previously shared with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2022 that she thought “it would be too late” to do it now. “[For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”

Is anyone else returning to Princess Diaries 3?

It’s probably the number one question on your mind — will Mia’s rival-turned-love interest, Lord Nicholas Devereaux, from the 2004 sequel come back? Well, it turns out that Chris Pine, who portrayed the former heir to the throne in Princess Diaries 2, is interested in reprising his role. “Yeah, I’m here! I’m here for it,” the actor told Entertainment Tonight in a March 26 interview. “Give me a phone call or an email.”

However, Chris specified that if he were to return, he’d rather a “low-profile hair helmet” as opposed to the longer hairstyle he rocked in the sequel. Fair enough.

Who is directing Princess Diaries 3?

Garry Marshall, who directed both Princess Diaries and Princess Diaries 2, sadly passed away in 2016. While it’s confirmed that Aadrita Mukerji is penning the script, Disney has not yet announced a director for the threequel.

When will Princess Diaries 3 come out?

Since Princess Diaries 3 was confirmed in November 2022, a release date has not been announced. Plot details and casting news are also being kept hush-hush, so it will probably be some time before we know when the film will debut.

Even leading lady Anne Hathaway thinks so. “We feel the exact same [as the fans do], and I know it’s probably very frustrating,” she told People in January 2023. “It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”

All we’ll say is… do make haste, Disney. We’ve been waiting decades for this!
