Michael Jordan’s Mother Deloris to Rescue Over 54,000 Victims Through Massive Project in Kenya

The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic helps uninsured and underinsured residents in MJ’s home state of North Carolina. But the family has made international health care provisions as well. Deloris Jordan was even in attendance to oversee the opening in Kenya.

Michael Jordan’s family has launched a gender-based violence recovery center through the Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre (KWCWC). The center, which is funded by the James R. Jordan Foundation International, was launched in Narok. NBA icon’s mother, Deloris Jordan, was present during the launch event this past Friday. Currently, it has over 33 consultation rooms and laboratories, making it the largest facility dedicated to treating survivors of GBV in Kenya.

As per reports, the facility’s total investment is over Ksh. 1.3 billion, which is approximately equal to $10,061,919. The investment was important as Dr. Hermes Gichane, Director of KWCWC, explained the number of cases happening in the country. “In 2019, I think we had about 14,000 cases as seen in our facilities around the country. But last year, we had about 54,000 cases seen in our health facilities and public health sector.”

The center not only focuses on medical care but also offers legal services, vocational training, financial literacy, reproductive health education, mental health support, and leadership training to enable survivors to support themselves. Currently, it is one of the largest rescue shelters in the country, with the capacity to accommodate over 90 survivors of GBV or 20 families at a time.

In the past 15 years, Deloris Jordan has made significant contributions to Kenya through her philanthropic efforts, especially focusing on the well-being of women and children.

According to Deloris, the center will be fundamental in providing end-to-end care for GBV survivors and their families in the country. She was in the country to champion the well-being of gender-based violence survivors and called for homegrown solutions to address the uniqueness of the problem.

“I have been here for a while, working through various governments from the Kibaki era. This centre is for you as the people of Kenya; this is your country,” said Deloris Jordan. She spoke in Roysambu Constituency, where she launched a medical facility that will cater to the victims of gender-based violence.”I’m just a foreigner. But ask yourself, what are you going to do as a person to support the fight against GBV? It’s not only women; we need men. Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre is about family.”

The list of Michael Jordan’s family’s philanthropic ways is long. Some notable ones are helping Make-A-Wish Foundation with $10 million. To $1 million to the Heart Institute is closely associated with long-time friend Howard H White.
