Sheryl Swoopes cleared the air concerning her takes on Caitlin Clark. The Indiana Fever rookie faced criticism during the 2024 season, but Swoopes was considered her biggest critic.
During this week’s Unapologetically Angel podcast, the four-time WNBA champion told Angel Reese she compares herself to current players who wear her old jersey number, including A’ja Wilson and Clark. Swoopes then explained that people made too much of her Clark statements.
“All of that is stupid to me. It’s not true, it’s all stupid. Like, when I look at the number 22s in the league, like I was 22, A’ja’s 22, Caitlin’s 22, like those are some hell of a good number 22s. And we’re all a part of the Nike family. A lot of the stuff people are trying to say is there, it just does not exist.
The women’s basketball legend admitted to a mistake in February and apologized for it. Still, people insist she hates Clark.
“I’m tired of it, I really am, and I can only imagine that she has to be tired of it as well. There was nothing there. The only time I made a mistake talking about Caitlin and what she’s done was on the podcast back in February, which I apologized for, but it’s like, ‘Nope, you hate her.”
What did Sheryl Swoopes say about Caitlin Clark?
The controversy began in August when Swoopes refused to give Clark credit for the Indiana Fever’s turnaround. She praised Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston for the team’s success instead. This sparked widespread reactions from fans and analysts, with Stephen A. Smith even calling her insane.
The situation continued when Swoopes ignored Clark’s achievements while announcing a Wings vs. Aces game. She also claimed that several Indiana players didn’t want to play with Clark before backpedaled on those comments.
Caitlin Clark finished her first WNBA season on Wednesday after being swept by the Connecticut Sun. However, she went out in style by dropping 25 points and dishing nine assists.
Fans are excited to see her dominate the league for years to come.
