College sports haven’t been the same since the NCAA introduced its Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy in June 2021. For the first time ever, student-athletes can make money off endorsements, sponsorships, and business deals—something that was off-limits for decades. It’s a huge shift, and while many see it as a win for athletes, not everyone is convinced it’s all good news.
Shaquille O’Neal, never one to hold back his opinions, is skeptical. He’s worried that some young players might lose their drive now that life-changing money is hitting their bank accounts before they even step foot in the NBA. To Shaq, NIL should be a stepping stone, not the finish line.

The Potential Downsides of NIL: Shaquille O’Neal’s Concerns for Young Athletes

On a recent episode of ‘The Big Podcast With Shaq’, the Hall of Famer shared his thoughts on how NIL might impact college athletes, particularly those with dreams of making it to the pros. His main concern? That big paychecks too early could kill a player’s hunger for greatness.

“I think it’s definitely gonna hurt people because, for people that have nothing, when you get something, it takes the pressure off,” Shaq said. “But that something should be the final prize. The final prize should be the NBA.”
He didn’t stop there. Without naming names, he pointed out an athlete who’s cashing in big on NIL.
“I know a cat—I don’t wanna say his name—who’s getting paid $7 million to play for one year,” he revealed. “Like, where is the motivation?”

Shaq’s point is clear. If a player is making millions in college, will they still push as hard to make it to the league?

Shaq’s concerns aren’t out of left field. NIL has already changed the way college sports operate, and we’re still figuring out what that means long-term. There’s no doubt these deals give athletes financial freedom and security they never had before. But does it come at the cost of ambition?

At the end of the day, it’s up to the athletes. Some will use NIL money as fuel to work even harder, knowing they have the resources to train, stay healthy, and build their brand. Others might get comfortable, satisfied with what they’ve already got. The reality is, NIL isn’t going anywhere. The question is whether young athletes can keep their eyes on the prize—because as Shaq sees it, the NBA should always be the real goal.
