James Comey Indicted on Charges of Lying to Congress and Obstruction

In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through Washington, former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on multiple federal charges, including lying to Congress and obstruction of justice. The indictment, unsealed Friday morning by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges that Comey deliberately misled lawmakers during key testimony and interfered with a federal investigation during his time at the bureau.
A Historic Indictment
This marks the first time in U.S. history that a former FBI director has faced criminal prosecution. The indictment stems from a multi-year investigation led by Special Counsel David Weiss, originally tasked with reviewing the FBI’s conduct during the 2016 and 2017 investigations into Russian election interference and related matters.
According to the 19-page indictment, Comey provided “materially false statements” to Congress during sworn testimony in 2017 regarding the origins and authorization of the FBI’s surveillance of Trump campaign associates. The indictment also alleges that Comey “knowingly withheld critical information” from congressional oversight committees, in violation of federal law.

Obstruction Allegations
In addition to perjury, the most serious charge involves obstruction of justice. Federal prosecutors allege that Comey attempted to “delay or derail” an internal Department of Justice inquiry into FBI surveillance practices by instructing subordinates to withhold documents and avoid contact with inspectors.
“The accused knowingly abused his position of power and trust to conceal misconduct within the agency and mislead both Congress and the American people,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in a brief statement. “No one, regardless of title or former position, is above the law.”
Comey was taken into federal custody early Friday morning at his Virginia residence without incident. He has since been released on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment next week.
Comey Responds
Comey, who has remained a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and an outspoken figure in political media, issued a defiant response through his attorney.
“These charges are politically motivated, baseless, and a blatant attempt to rewrite history,” said defense attorney Marcia Paul. “Mr. Comey has always acted with integrity and transparency. We look forward to clearing his name in court.”
Comey also posted on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account: “Truth matters. I’ll see you in court.”
Political Reactions Pour In
Reactions to the indictment were swift and deeply divided. Prominent Republicans hailed the move as long overdue.
“Justice is finally being served,” said House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH). “Comey weaponized the FBI against a sitting president. This is a step toward accountability.”
Democrats, meanwhile, voiced skepticism about the timing and substance of the charges.
“Comey made mistakes, but this feels like a politically convenient scapegoating,” said Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT). “We must be cautious about criminalizing public service.”
What’s Next?
If convicted, Comey could face up to five years in prison for each count of lying to Congress, and up to ten years for obstruction of justice. Legal analysts expect a prolonged and highly publicized trial that could once again thrust FBI conduct—and Comey’s controversial legacy—into the center of national debate.
