Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted on Charges of Lying to Congress, Obstruction of Justice

In a dramatic turn of events that has reignited deep political tensions in Washington, former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on federal charges, including lying to Congress and obstruction of justice. The indictment was unsealed early Friday morning by the U.S. Department of Justice, marking the first time in American history that a former FBI chief faces criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office.
The charges stem from Comey’s testimony to congressional committees in 2017 and 2018, as well as his role in overseeing politically sensitive investigations into the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath.
The Indictment
The 24-page indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, outlines two key allegations:
That Comey made “materially false statements” under oath regarding the origins and oversight of the FBI’s surveillance of members of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team.
That he engaged in obstruction of justice by attempting to interfere with a Justice Department inquiry into alleged misconduct within the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division.
Prosecutors allege that Comey deliberately misled Congress about the approval process for FISA warrants used to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, and that he withheld key documents from House oversight committees.
“This indictment reflects a serious breach of public trust by one of the nation’s top law enforcement officials,” said Special Counsel David Weiss, who led the investigation. “No individual is above the law—not even a former FBI Director.”

Arrest and Bail
Comey was taken into custody without incident at his Virginia home at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Friday. He appeared briefly in federal court, where he entered a not guilty plea and was released on $500,000 bail. His legal team has called the charges “politically motivated” and “legally flawed.”
Comey’s Response
Comey, 64, issued a defiant statement after his court appearance:“This is not justice. This is retribution. I served my country with integrity, and I will fight these baseless charges with everything I have.”
He also posted on social media:“I’ve seen corruption. I’ve fought it. I won’t be silenced by it.”
Political Fallout
Reactions to the indictment have fallen largely along partisan lines. Republicans, long critical of Comey’s handling of the Trump-Russia probe, praised the indictment as long overdue.
“James Comey weaponized the FBI for political purposes. Today is a step toward restoring accountability,” said Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO).
Democrats, however, expressed concern about what they see as the politicization of the Justice Department.
“This looks more like a political vendetta than a pursuit of justice,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). “We should all be cautious about the precedent this sets.”
What’s Next?
Comey is expected to face trial in early 2026. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison per count of false statements, and up to ten years for obstruction.
Legal analysts say the case could become one of the most high-profile political trials in decades, reopening debates over the FBI, partisan influence, and the rule of law.
