A newly resurfaced video clip is at the center of the growing legal firestorm surrounding former FBI Director James Comey, who was indicted last week on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction of justice. The footage, which is now circulating widely on social media and news outlets, appears to capture the exact moment Comey allegedly made false statements during sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2017.

The Clip in Question

The 57-second video, originally recorded on June 8, 2017, shows Comey responding to a line of questioning from then-Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), who served as committee chair. In the exchange, Burr asks Comey about the FBI’s use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to monitor individuals associated with the Trump campaign, specifically former foreign policy adviser Carter Page.

Burr:“Was the decision to seek a FISA warrant on Carter Page based in any way on the Steele dossier?”

Comey responds:“No, Senator. To my knowledge, the Steele dossier was not a critical part of the application. It was included, but it was not the basis for the warrant.”

However, recently declassified internal FBI documents contradict that claim. According to those documents, the Steele dossier played a “central and essential role” in the initial FISA application submitted in October 2016 and in subsequent renewals.

Legal Implications

Federal prosecutors allege that Comey’s statement was a “material misrepresentation” designed to mislead Congress and downplay the FBI’s reliance on unverified intelligence. In the formal indictment, Special Counsel David Weiss notes that Comey had been briefed multiple times in 2017 and 2018 on the dossier’s prominence in the FISA application process, yet still made the above claim under oath.

“This clip is more than a soundbite—it’s a piece of evidence,” said former federal prosecutor Angela Romero on CNN. “If Comey knew the Steele dossier was central to the warrant and said otherwise under oath, that’s perjury.”

A Divided Reaction

The viral nature of the video has only deepened the political divide. Supporters of the former FBI director argue that the exchange is being taken out of context, claiming that Comey’s answer reflected his understanding at the time.

“This is not a ‘gotcha’ moment,” said former Comey aide Daniel Richman. “It’s a complicated investigation, and that clip doesn’t show the full picture.”

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers have seized on the footage as definitive proof of misconduct.

“The American people were lied to—plain and simple,” said Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR). “This clip shows exactly why Comey must be held accountable.”

Social Media Firestorm

The video has been viewed over 12 million times on X (formerly Twitter), sparking hashtags like #ComeyLied and #FISAtruth. Conservative commentators have labeled it the “smoking gun,” while critics of the indictment say it’s being used to fuel partisan outrage.

What Happens Next?

Comey has not directly addressed the video but has maintained his innocence through his legal team. His trial is scheduled to begin in March 2026, where prosecutors are expected to feature the clip as part of their evidence.

As public interest in the case grows, this single moment—just 57 seconds long—may end up shaping the legacy of one of the most controversial FBI directors in modern American history.
